Shawnee 8 Fort Knox 0. Shawnee has had 4 or 5 seasons with 0-10 record. The players at Fort Knox that played Friday night on Sunday may have had to get on a special plane and fly overseas with their parents.
Clinton County is a small farming area down in southeast Kentucky. Some seasons they played home and home with Pickett County, TN. to open up the season. The bus ride for both schools is only 12 miles. The school with the win would be 1-9 in their state. The other school finished 0-10 in their state.
Boone County in the 9th region was a powerhouse for a number of seasons. In a 10-year period they were 22-100. Shawn Alexander going back 30 years brought this school to our sports pages. Ryle football field sets 7 miles from this high school.
Lynn Camp at Corbin. Old School Hound do you believe Coach Mitchell had a team maybe like the 2003 team and could have won at Corbin?
Montgomery County at Mount Sterling has always been the bedroom for Lexington. The Recreation Bowl has showcased many great football teams for many years.
Betsy Layne at Shelby Valley. 8-26-1978 had Virgie vs. Betsy Layne at Prestonsburg. Did Betsy Layne have a football field starting out?
Aliquippa, PA. High School just outside of Pittsburgh has always been one of the toughest places to play. The Pit their field finally got turf this season. 100 years for the stadium. Mike Ditka played high school.
East Ridge at Pike Central on Friday. 50 years ago Elkhorn City made the trip to state championship with a special team. Billy Powell who was a assistant coach and through the seasons as a basketball official. How many special players has he seen play in over 50 years across east and southeast Kentucky?
Louisa in 1973 fielded a special team that lost at Elkhorn City. If the win this game i cannot found out if Lynch travels 23 south or Louisa goes over Pine Mountain.

Cross town neighbors, Corbin and Lynn Camp have only met 12 times in Corbin's 100 year history. They have only played one time since 1958, and that was in 1998 when Mike Whitaker's Hounds put a 40-point beating on the Campers at Campbell Field.  But from 1950-1954, the two schools met five times on the gridiron, with Lynn Camp winning 3 of those by a combined score of 96-18 . The 1954 game finished in a 0-0 tie in a game played at... where else... the Corbin Golf Club.  I  guess 0-0 was par for the course.  And now you know... the REST... OF THE STORY.

As I mentioned earlier, Corbin has only played Lynn Camp one time in the last 65 years!!!  There's a reason for that. No Corbin coach would touch that game , even if he a 12 inch pole Smile .  Only Mike Whitaker had the nards to schedule the Campers. The 2003 LC team that you referenced is the team that beat Pikeville in the third round of the playoffs and lost in the state semis  to Beechwood.  Would Corbin have beaten Lynn Camp that season? Most likely. Corbin beat Somerset by 32 that season, while LC lost to them by 14.   I mean, LC did lose to Whitley Co. and Harlan that season before going on a massive roll to end the season.  Would Corbin have even considered playing Lynn Camp that season. Absolutely NOT !!!  In my  lifetime Corbin has always  considered that game to be a "no-win" game for them.  They would be expected to crush Lynn Camp but to lose to little brother across town would be a huge embarrassment.

2005 Lynn Camp would have been a better example. That's the only Lynn Camp team I can think of that would have competed with Corbin that year as they were very good and 2005 Corbin was very average.

2003 maybe for Lynn camp,  but if you want the real question, look at 2005. Lynn Camp would have definitely won that one.

Lynn Camp went further than ever in 2003. But their regular season had some weird losses. Like Leslie county and Harlan. But they did make it all the way to the state semis before losing to beechwood.

you have to remember that just the year before that, Corbin went to the state title game and still had several players from that team so idk if I would have went again Corbin. Corbin also had a good year in 04 and made it to the state semis. There only losses were to a good Williamsburg team (who they haven’t played since) south laurel (the good irwin years where they had the best teams they ever had except the warren ones) and bell county drubbed them. But they didn’t lose again until the state semis by one point to Owensboro catholic who only lost to belfry by a touchdown so they could have easily been champs that year had things went a different way. I was at the ocath game.

The one I believe is 2005. Corbin simply wasn’t good that year. They lost a lot. Lynn camp IMO had their most talent. They just couldn’t put it together in the playoffs. All teams in the tri county that year were really down.

2003 Lynn Camp was a good team, but they got very lucky to go on their playoff run. Pikeville upset Somerset in the playoffs, who beat Lynn Camp earlier in the year in a game that was kept much closer than it should have been by the officials. Lynn Camp matched up much better with that Pikeville team than they did Somerset and the rest is history.

The 2005 Lynn Camp team was way better than the 2003 team, but the region was also tougher that year.

The fun one of this type of scenario is figuring out what year Whitley County would've gotten a win over Corbin had those schools not taken a break between '85 and '15. My guess would've been '95, especially if that game had played later in the year.

Don't get me wrong. I love my Hounds. But I would give a month's salary to watch Lynn Camp beat Corbin in a football game just so I could watch Dave Cox and Tommy Greer melt into a green goo just like the Wicked Witch of the West.

Belfry and Phelps have neighboring school districts geographically. They have been district mates in other sports for as long as I can remember. They have only played one time in football. 1980- Belfry 49  Phelps 0.

The size and trajectory of the two schools is obviously the biggest reason they haven't played, but furthermore it is about the roads. The two quickest paths to Phelps as the crow flies for the longest time take you over narrow one lane road mountains that for school buses were a dicey at best proposition.

Wheeler when reading your post and the mention of Elkhorn City reminded me of something and maybe you have some knowledge about it. When we were living in Paintsville, I heard a story probably 3-4 time from some of the older fans about when Paintsville played at Elkhorn in a playoff game maybe but anyway, after the game the father of Paintsville/UK basketball great John Pelfrey was shot in the head while strolling around congratulating players. The shot came from a distance away and was heard by many when fired and I just wanted to ask with your knowledge of yesteryear if you could add anything to it. It didn’t kill him, the story is it glanced off his forehead when he turned to shake another hand. Thanks for any info I found that story fascinating.

The one I believe is 2005. Corbin simply wasn’t good that year. They lost a lot. Lynn camp IMO had their most talent. They just couldn’t put it together in the playoffs. All teams in the tri county that year were really down.

The fun one of this type of scenario is figuring out what year Whitley County would've gotten a win over Corbin had those schools not taken a break between '85 and '15.  My guess would've been '95, especially if that game had played later in the year.

there would have been several times Whitley would have at least been the favorite. 99-01 we’re all years Whitley could have won.

95 Whitley
96 Whitley
97 toss up
98 toss up
99 Whitley
00 Whitley
01 Whitley
02 Corbin
03 toss up
04 Corbin
05 Whitley
06 Corbin
07 Corbin
08 Whitley
09 Whitley
10 Whitley
11 toss up
12 Whitley
13 toss up
14-now all Corbin

I think you’ll find if you look at common opponents, etc. this will fit. there’s a reason Jewell stayed away from Whitley and the only reason that series started back is because of the direction each program was headed in.

not saying this is how it would have happened but I definitely think we’d be able to look back at see this series in a much different light had they never stopped.
I do think corbin would have won every single year before 92 or 93. I know whitley didn’t have a losing record from 90-01. There were several 8-3 and 7-4 teams during that time, mostly because they were in a district with bell and rock who were always beating them up until the late 90s when whitley would beat one and lose to the other. Corbin had a lot of good records those years but were in historically the weakest district and region in 2A for a lot of years. Maybe the Corbin fans on here could fill us in on those early 90s years.

Not sure that Whitley could've gotten Corbin in the first few years of the Campbell era since they put up good records against a bunch of weak schedules outside of Bell and Rock. It's likely that '95 would've been the breakthru Whitley win and also probable that Corbin was the worst team in the county that year since Williamsburg went 10-2 with competitive losses to Middlesboro and Pikeville.

Whitley County has never had a win over Corbin in 23 meetings , dating back to 1966. The Colonels have been outscored by an average of 38-6 in those 23 games.

Lynn Camp has fared much better against Corbin in just 12 games , winning three and tying one. In their three wins they outscored the Hounds 96-18 .

those 23 meeting came against 23 of the worst teams Whitley fielded as well. corbin stayed away from Whitley during the Jewell years. Believe what you want, but there were a few years Whitley would have lit the scoreboard up on them.
you can look at common opponents some of those years and see that.
football at Whitley before Campbell was pretty much non existent. Two or three district titles from 63-89. That was all. Campbells first year was 89. A losing season. 90-94 wasn’t great, but winning records none the less. Those teams from 95-01 were really good football teams during a time when corbin wasn’t great. I think Whitley would have sprinkled in a few more wins in the 00s, but from 2011 or 2012 on corbin has revamped while Whitley’s been stuck.

you mention Lynn camp having a better time, Whitley played Lynn camp every single year from 90-04 without a loss, and corbin hasn’t touched Lynn camp but one time in my lifetime and I don’t know why that game happened to be honest.
point is, corbin wouldn’t be 60-0 against Whitley if they played every single year since Whitley started, but they most likely would be 40-20 at worst.
