Week One

#1 Male Won vs Ballard 47-0
Male started the year by played a team everyone expected them to walk over and they did just that. Ballard scheduled tough and looked good even after a loss to Boyle County. Then Male took Ballard behind the woodshed and thrashed them. The Bulldogs had a few mistakes like a goal line interception and a fumbled punt, but their passing game couldn’t be stopped and the defense just smothered the Bruins. Next week they play Doss which should be another dominating performance.

#2 Scott County Won vs Lafayette 59-28
The Cardinals get leapfrogged this week despite a good game against Lafayette because Ballard was looking like a solid 6A squad and Male dismantled them while Lafayette hung tough with Scott County for the first half before the Cardinals put away this game late. The Generals showed more life than they did last week in their win over Bryan Station, but it wasn’t enough to withstand Scott County’s high-powered offense. It’s looking like business as usual for Scott County, which is good in that they will lock themselves into the top five of the class, but bad because they don’t usually win a title from that position. Next week they play Highlands, who is fresh off a statement win over Campbell County.

#3 Trinity Lost to Warren Central [IN] 42-41
This game had an eerie sense of Déjà vu to it. Not only is it an exact reversal of Trinity’s win over Warren Central last year, but it ended a lot like their first game this year. Once again the Rocks had the lead in the fourth quarter, choked on an offensive drive that could have put it away, and then had the ball rammed down their throats on defense. It could be argued that two hard fought losses to the top teams in Indiana are no reason to move Trinity down as no other team has faced competition that stiff. But all the same it’s hard to leave a team at number one when they open with two losses. Trinity will have its chances over the next two weeks when they play Archbishop Moeller [OH] and Male. Until then other teams deserve the spotlight.

#4 Saint Xavier Bye week
Saint Xavier had their bye week and they are probably thankful for it. Their back-up QB has gotten an extra week of practice in before they face a powerful Bowling Green team next week. They remain at number for now thanks to Butler’s similar loss to DeSales who are shaping up to be a real force in 2A this year.

#5 Frederick Douglas Won vs Tates Creek 48-14
The Broncos keep on rolling. They turned in a slightly better game against the Commodores than Henry Clay (48-14 vs 50-22), but both were dominant performances. Frederick Douglas is looking like a serious dark horse in 6A, but we’ll have to wait a few weeks until they have games in common with most of the class. Still, they’ve got the athletes and look to be well coached. The Eastern bracket of the 6A might be a two horse race between them and Scott County. Next week they welcome Paintsville to Lexington for a home game. Paintsville is a strong 1A team, but anything other than a win would certainly take some shine off of the Broncos.

#6 Butler Lost to DeSales 35-34
Butler has been looking even stronger this year than they were last year. Unfortunately for them so is DeSales. In a repeat of the 2017 they just lost by one point to the 2A team. Butler had a two score lead deep in the fourth quarter, but the Colts pulled off some big plays to take their slim lead, then defended well against a Butler offense that had been giving them trouble all night. Butler can at least look forward to an easy game next week. Their opponent, Western, is 0-2 on the season.

#7 Central Hardin Won vs Bullitt East 43-7
The Bruins take a big step up. While they did have a great game against Bullitt East, it’s mostly because of what happened in the Bowling Green/PRP game. Bowling Green crushed PRP 44-7 which makes Central Hardin’s close loss (20-13) look pretty good. Central Hardin is looking like the odds-on favorite to be the top team in the Western region, but thanks to cross-bracketing they will be paired off with Louisville’s district three (Male, St. X, Butler, Manual, and PRP) and are unlikely to repeat as regional champs. Next week the Bruins look to revenge a 15-0 loss from last year against Christian Academy of Louisville. This will be a tough game, but Central Hardin has the tools to win it.

#8 Simon Kenton Won vs Bryan Station 37-20
This game was closer to last year’s success (49-27 vs 37-20), but it isn’t dominant enough to justify moving them back up in the rankings. Even worse, last week’s narrow win against Meade County looks bad in light of Anderson County’s solid win over them (34-19). The Pioneers play Conner next week in another game they should win.

#9 Henry Clay Lost to Covington Catholic 41-0
Henry Clay became the latest 6A victims of the Covcath steamroll. The clock was running by the end of the second quarter, but give them credit, the Blue Devils never folded or gave up. Henry Clay moves up into the rankings less due to their game this week and more because of the losses of other teams and the validation of their earlier win against Tates Creek by Frederick Douglass. Having a similar score to the number five team to a common opponent says good things about Henry Clay. Next week Henry Ckay gets a chance to prove themselves against Johnson Central. The Golden Eagles are coming off of a close loss to Capital [WV] and will be looking to make a statement. Last year the Golden Eagles won (40-28), if Henry Clay can turn the table on them, they’ll be moving up.

#10 Manual Won vs Fern Creek 33-13
After being shut-out by Central [Louisville] and losing their starting QB for the year, I wasn’t expecting much from the Crimsons. Despite that Manual avenged a 14-10 loss from last year with some solid playwork, a surprise from a team known far more for their defensive ability than their offensive output. Not that the former was missing as they held the Tigers to 13 points. Still, the strength of this win isn’t a sure thing right now because Fern Creek’s only win is against Seneca, an easy team. Manual could easily slip back out of the top ten. The Crimsons don’t play anyone next week, and resume on 9/7 against Western, a team they should easily beat. Fern Creek plays Central next week and their performance will tell a lot about the value of this win for Manual.

Honorable Mentions:
Nobody this week

Big Drops:
Ballard Lost to Male 47-0
Ballard looked good against Boyle County, but the huge loss to Male keeps the Bruins out of the top ten. They will have their work cut out for them to recover from that. They need a dominating win against Collins next week to start.

Pleasure Ridge Park Lost to Bowling Green 44-7
There were rumors that this PRP team would not be as good as last year’s and the crushing loss to Bowling Green seems to confirm that. The game against Eastern next week should be an easy win, but their prospects within their district are not looking good.

Ryle Lost to Lexington Catholic 50-34
Ryle keep the score from being embarrassing, but this game was never in doubt. The Knights controlled it from start to finish and Ryle takes their second loss of the season. Next week against Boone County is a must win game for the Raiders to stay relevant in 6A this season.

Freddie Douglas needs to schedule someone to prove they should be #5

They did have a nice win over Wayne County, but I see your point. The real problem is that the only team I could see moving ahead of them is Butler. 6A has taken a lot of losses early in the season and few teams look good right now.

No way Trinity is #3. They are #1 until a Kentucky school defeats them. Male lost their best running back in their win over Ballard. Ballard has not won a big game since Bobby Redman was their Head Coach. Scott County beat North Bullitt and Lafayette and they deserve to be ranked ahead of Trinity? Opinions vary.

I agree, Trinity should be #1.

It is a two or at best a three team race. It is a shame. Of course, if we returned to 4 classes, it would be more entertaining but the playoff results would be the same. Boone County has way too many schools. Oldham County, Warren County, even Fayette has too many schools. Scott County should have added on and not built another school. More principals and more administrators do not equal better education. Jefferson County proves this point EVERY DAY!

Those Indy schools Trinity played have 4 grade co-ed enrollments of 5300+ and 4000+. Colerain, just outside Cincy, was asked if they wanted to split and they said NO.

Male had similar scores against Floyd and Ballard back in the beginning of 2015 while Trinity handily beat Ensworth and Brentwood. Everyone expected a Trinity win against Male, and Male shocked the Rocks, 42-13 .

This year, Trinity lost to higher quality teams than either Male or Scott County has faced, but they did lose. More disturbingly they blew leads deep in the fourth quarter in both games. I have every confidence that Trinity will correct this and improve, taking back the top spot, but I need to see a win from them before they're number one in my opinion.
