PIKEVILLE, Ky. *â Trailing by eight points at halftime, 42-34, Campbellsville men's basketball pulled the first upset of the Mid-South Conference Tournament by flipping the eight-point deficit into an 18-point win over Life University, 82-64.
The win is the first for Brent Vernon over his former boss, Keith Adkins, and the Life Running Eagles. Campbellsville now heads into the Mid-South Conference semifinal looking for another first in Vernon's career â a win over University of Pikeville. The Tigers and top-seeded Bears tipoff at 2 p.m. ET in the East Ky. Expo Center.
No. 4-seed Life shot 52 percent from the floor in the first half, but the fifth-seeded Tigers held them without a point until the 15:09 mark in the second half. CU started the half on a 20-0 run to lead 64-42 and Life was never able to recover.
Hagen Tyler scored a season-high 24 points and hit three 3-point baskets. Jacob King followed suit with three triples to tally a career-high 17 and Shawn Johnson led the Tigers with a career-high 14 rebounds. Jalen Coates also had double figures with 13 points, while Andrew Smith had 10 points and 12 boards â his eighth double-double and third straight.
Devin Dorsett led the Running Eagles with 20 points, but the Tigers held First-Team All-MSC performer Undra Mitchen to only nine points on 3-of-13 shooting.
The first half saw nine 3-point baskets and a fast-paced game that didn't have many whistles due to each team settling for long jumpers. Campbellsville, which didn't hit any triples in last appearance in the East Ky. Expo Center, made five 3-pointers while Life had four in the first half.
The Tigers finished hitting eight 3s today, while Life was 1-of-9 from deep in the second half.
Trailing 42-34 after the break, Jalen Coates sparked the Tigers by finishing an old-fashioned 3-point play and picking up a steal and layup for five quick points cutting the deficit to three, 42-39.
On the next CU possession, Johnson grabbed one of his four offensive boards and hit his roommate Tyler for a 3-pointer. Tyler was feeling it early in the half as he stepped into a 30-footer to push CU's run to 13-0 and a 47-42 lead with 16:09 left.
Tyler returned the favor to Johnson one minute later, as Johnson nailed a triple to force a Life timeout. The biggest play of the game happened to come out of the break, though. On the next possession out of the timeout, Tyler picked up a steal and went coast to coast for a layup pushing CU ahead by 10, 52-42.
Life's Michael Moore ended the 20-0 run for Campbellsville with free throws at the 15:09 mark.
CU took its largest lead to this point, 62-51, with 8:45 left after Smith tipped in a Coates miss and King capitalized after another Life turnover.
The Running Eagles had only one turnover in the opening half, but Campbellsville turned them over eight times in the second 20 minutes of play and scored 11 points off those miscues.
With 5:57 left, Coates found Smith for the proverbial nail in the coffin after the big fella slammed one home to extend CU's lead back to 11, 64-43.
The Tigers rolled the rest of the way and ended up taking its largest lead of 21 points after King made laid in his 17th point. Deven Dorsett hit a half-court shot with time expiring to cut CU's final advantage to 18 points.
Campbellsville is the lone institution in the Mid-South Conference with both men's and women's programs left in the championships. The Lady Tigers tipoff Saturday vs. Lindsey Wilson at 12 p.m. ET and the Tigers will follow at 2 p.m.
