COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Playing its regular-season finale, Michigan fired on all cylinders Saturday (Feb. 24) as the Wolverines throttled Maryland by a score of 85-61 at Xfinity Center.
Muhammad-Ali Abdur-Rahkman scored 22 of his career-high 28 points in the opening half and Michigan poured in 15 three-point baskets as the Wolverines completed a season sweep of Maryland and handed the Terps their worst home loss since 1998. Maryland, which entered play with a sparkling 15-2 home record, had not lost by 20 points or more at home since a 104-72 setback against Duke on Jan. 3, 1998.
Michigan (24-7, 13-5 Big Ten) scored just three points in the first five minutes of the game and did not take its first lead until the 13:45 mark of the half following a triple from Abudur-Rahkman. Maryland (19-12, 8-10 Big Ten) led once more, 12-11, but from that point forward John Beilein's Wolverines showed high precision in building a 54-24 halftime advantage.
Contributions came from everywhere as U-M closed the half on a staggering 34-9 run -- including spurts of 9-0, 10-0 and 8-0 -- with guard play contributing all but six points and bench players providing 22 points.
Abudur-Rahkman was sensational with 22 points as he was 6-for-10 from behind the arc. He also grabbed five rebounds and dished out four assists in 18 first-half minutes. Jordan Poole came off the bench for 12 points (4-for-4 three-point FGs) and Jaaron Simmons contributed seven points (3-for-3) in six minutes.
All told in the first half, Michigan shot 60.7 percent (17-of-28) from the floor and 57.9 percent from deep (11-of-19).
Michigan led by as many as 32 points in the second half while pulling back its attack significantly. Maryland cut the deficit to 19 points with 5:33 to play, but the outcome was never in doubt as 12 players logged minutes with four hitting double figures.
Michigan awaits its Big Ten Tournament seeding and pairing announcement, which will occur Sunday night (Feb. 25). The Wolverines can be seeded no lower than fifth in the tournament and can earn the No. 4 seed, and a double bye, if Nebraska loses its regular-season finale on Sunday versus Penn State.
