LOS ANGELES - UCLA used a big 18-0 run in the first half and a decisive 9-2 run in the second half to defeat California, 70-57.
The Bruins trailed by 13 points, 27-14, at the 9:50 mark, and center Thomas Welsh went to the locker room less than a minute later with an injury. But UCLA turned it up a notch after that, rallying to score 16 unanswered points, part of an 18-0 UCLA run, to take a 32-27 lead. The Bruins kept Cal off the board for eight minutes and ended the half with a 38-31 lead.
UCLA (14-7, 5-4 in the Pac-12) held the lead for the first quarter of the second half, but Cal (7-14, 1-7) came back to regain the lead at the 11:58 mark on a three-pointer by Justice Sueing. The Bruins rallied once again, however, scoring six straight points to regain the lead, 51-47. A three-pointer by Welsh capped a 9-2 run that made it 54-49 UCLA with 6:42 to play, and a fast-break dunk by Jaylen Hands a minute later ignited the Pauley Pavilion crowd and gave the Bruins a 58-51 lead. Cal never got closer than seven points the rest of the way.
Aaron Holiday led UCLA with 21 points, six assists and four rebounds. Hands (14 points, six rebounds) and Kris Wilkes (10 points, seven rebounds) also scored in double figures for the Bruins. Sueing led Cal with 24 points, and Marcus Lee added 13 with eight rebounds.
UCLA will next play Stanford on Saturday, Jan. 27 at 7:30 pm in Pauley Pavilion.
