Should be another big game tomorrow at Ashland. Lets hope we pull this out. Hope I get off in time to come. Im going to say Kittens get this one.

I hope to make it too. Unfortunately, I see Boyd County out coaching Ashland, like always. With Robinson, Parker, and Fulton, Ashland should win. Pete is just too good of a coach for Ashlandâs buddy league offense and defense to overcome.

My take after watching this game is this
#1- Savannah Wheeler is the best player in the region with the best supporting cast being coached by the best coach.
#2-Boyd Co uses multiple screens and motions to get everyone involved.
#3-Pete does a great job of calling sets to take advantage of match ups
#4-Boyd's roll players are better than Ashland's roll players.
#5-Robinson has the ability to score 40 any given night- but it does not always equal success against the good teams.
#6-Ashland's offense has no motion- very few screens- 5 out look and a lot of standing around watching Robinson.
#7-Not sure Ashland is as good defensively as they claim to be- saw a lot of bad attempts to cut off drives/do not know how to defend screen actions/and BC is better at rebounding the ball as a team.
8-BC is tougher/ more physical/plays harder/ never back down- never quit- play through adversity team than Ashland.
#9- BC toughness is a reflection of their coach.
#10-BC is best team in region.
10 points to ponder after round 2 of watching these 2 teams play. I think the development of BC players is a direct reflection of how Coach molds his players and helps them to be successful in his system and it is refreshing to watch kids play their rolls and have fun doing so...I know Ashland didn't play well and Parker had an off night and that happens from time to time- but as a team they looked very confused/lacked toughness/and seemed to let the frustrations carry over into other aspects of their game.
A lot of games left with some good match ups coming up with some good teams- but there will definitely be a round 3 in districts and quite possibly round 4 in regions- always look forward to those games.
Good luck all and nice job Lady Lions!

BC was good this evening and Ashland was really bad minus Robinson . Still just a 6 to 9 pt game thats a good sign. Not saying the Kittens are better but it will be interesting come tourney time. Balance was good for BC i agree.

My question is what can Ashland change to beat BC. Parker didn't shoot well but BC was part of the reason. She was made to put ball on the floor and that's not her strong point. Her shots were contested. The 1st game earlier in the year BC won by 5 and shot terrible....and those were good looks. Robinson could probably get 40 anytime she wants....but....the Kittens become watchers. Look at the disparity in foul shots. Ashland gets nothing going to the rim except for Robinson. 5 out offense shooting 3's only works when you have 3 or 4 good shooters....Ashland's 3 point percentage as a team is horrendous....and would be way worse if not for Parker.....I'm saying they need movement/screens/attack the rim/post play. Haven't seen that in a few years from Kittens.

All around good observations above. The only thing that has been settled, though, is that Boyd is better than Ashland, Wheeler is better than Robinson, and Fraley is better than Bradley.
I go back to my preseason rankings that had Ashland 4th, though. Let's not hand the region to Boyd just yet. Russell and West Carter might have something to say about it. I look forward to those matchups in the coming weeks.

BC is looking good

Boyd county obviosly has the best team in the 16th at this point but Robinson is by far the best player in the region.

My response to Cheezy would be this- Robinson is a stud! And I'm sure you've read many articles and scouting service reports--and quite possibly have see her play a few times or maybe more- but the " by far" response just shows your lack of 16th region knowledge.
Both of these kids are special players with "different" skill sets. Robinson and Wheeler both are excellent ball handlers with excellent passing skills. Both players use their ability to get to the rim to set up others to score as well as finishing at a high rate at the rim. Wheeler and Robinson both use their body well in traffic. Robinson is stronger for sure- but Wheeler is fearless in traffic and can draw fouls and finish. Robinson probably rebounds a tad better because of her strength and jumping ability but Wheeler at her height isn't far behind- getting inside the trees for key rebounds on foul shots as well as other times in the game. The 2 main differences in these 2 players are turnovers and points. Wheeler is very efficient with the ball and her turnover to assist ratio is way better than Robinson. Robinson plays the game at a way faster pace than her teammates and I have seen games in the past with her having double digits in turnovers. Not always her fault but she is the trigger and must take care of he ball. Wheeler as a Jr is the all time leading scorer in BC history. And she still has around 45 to 50 games to play. Scoring 27 a game on around 19-20 shots is incredible and she could very well be more selfish and score way more. Robinson looks to assist more than shoot and is not a great shooter. Wheeler has to be guarded from 28' in and that's not an exaggeration. Robinson had 38 to Wheelers 28 and had an incredible game last time out- and they lost. Wheeler had 14 in the 1st quarter and got BC off to a big lead- and then became distributor and finished with 28. Ranking players is so opinion based and as a BC fan I'm sure I'm a little biased- but "my opinion" is that you don't watch much 16th region girls basketball. I've watched both of these girls play from middle school on and am a big 16th region fan- Wheeler quite possibly could break Queen's record from her days at Rose Hill as the all time 16th region scoring champ- not bad company!

Winning or losing is the ultimate judge of who is better. Wheeler has never lost to a Robinson led team in her high school career. Itâs like when Alexis Robinson of Ashland was better than Logan Fraley for Boyd. I think she was 11-3 against her in their high school careers. Easy call. Robinson was better. Cheezy should come see Wheeler play sometime.

I have seen both kids play on more than one occasion. Maybe we just have to agree to disagree on this one. let me ask you this..Boyd County and Ashland are playing for the region championship game in a month or so. Robinson is playing for Boyd and Wheeler is playing for Ashland. Who Wins this one?
01-17-2018, 01:12 AM
Boyd and Ashland have to play Districts 1st. There is no guarantee that they will play for Region Championship. Region will feature a very good Russell team that took Boyd to the wire and an excellent young West Carter team. Russell is finally getting healthy and the jury is still out on WC as they haven't played Boyd/Russell/Ashland as of yet. That being said - if Boyd and Ashland do make it to the Region championship game it would be a 4th matchup. Usually when teams play that many times it's tough to call. As far as who is the better "16th Region" player I stick with last years MOP and I'd have to say this years also- because we are ranking them as 16th Region HS players and not future WNBA or College potential.

Work with me here Dookie. Boyd and Ashland are playing a big game. Robinson and Wheeler switch teams. Which team wins it?
01-17-2018, 06:54 AM
Theowing out different scenarios like this only proves my point- But I'll play along. Boyd wins- but- not because of the player switch- because Fraley wouldn't have 5 girls standing around the 3 point line watching Robinson " go to work". He'd be running plays to fit his talent. And- to further that- Shears and Paynter would both avg 20 or more and get more shots. And Wheeler would average around 35 or more if she were a Kitten. One thing I didn't understand last game- why did Robinson not guard Wheeler? My answer would be that he didn't want Robinson in foul trouble- and I've seen Wheeler do that to the best defenders in the state. Both girls excellent talents and fun to watch and I'm sure both will have excellent College careers. But as far as 16th Region HS players go- Wheeler quite possibly will be a 3 time MOP winner.

If they switched teams I would take Boyd in a blowout. Thats all I'm saying. If I got to pick one girl from the 16th region to start a basketball team with it would be Robinson. You guys obviously don't see it that way. That's okay. Can we agree that they are 1-2 in the region? What is the MOP?

2 very good teams.. got a feeling they’ll be meeting up a few more times...
