PATRIOTS OPEN MSC PLAY WITH 91-72 WIN OVER LIFE
Williamsburg, KY – The 24th-ranked University of the Cumberlands men's basketball team had six players in double figures en route to a 91-72 win over Life in their Mid-South Conference opener Saturday afternoon at the O. Wayne Rollins Center. With the win the Patriots improve to 13-2 overall and 1-0 in MSC action while the Running Eagles fall to 11-5 overall and 0-1 in conference play.

Life scored the first three points of the game, but the Patriots were quick to answer as Kaashif English found Eric Duncan for a three-pointer a minute into the first half. That three sparked an 11-0 run, which included long balls from English and Gary to give UC an 11-3 advantage just over three minutes in. After a Running Eagles free throw, Malik Colvin-Seldon hit a pair of buckets as part of a 6-0 run to extend the lead to 17-4. The Running Eagles used a 16-7 run, over the course of the next eight minutes to cut the lead to 24-20 with 6:50 remaining in the opening period. On the ensuing Patriots possession Colvin-Seldon connected with Duncan from behind-the-arc for his second three-pointer of the game. A minute later Will Gary tallied six of his 11 first half points to extend the lead to 33-24 with 5:05 left. Life ended the first half on a 9-6 run to cut the lead to 39-33 at the break.

Bernard Samuel hit a field goal to start the second half, before the Running Eagles scored six straight to cut the lead to 41-39. Colvin-Seldon netted six of UC's next seven points to extend the lead to 48-41 with 16:00 remaining. Life was able to cut the lead to one point two minutes later, which was the closest they got as Chance Morton drained a three-pointer to push the lead back up to four. The two teams traded baskets twice, before the Patriots went on a 15-2 run to take a 70-53 lead with 7:28 left. During that run Morton hit a pair from behind-the-arc to tie his career-high of three three-pointers. Gary added eight of UC's next ten points to extend their lead to 80-61 with 4:24 remaining. UC ended the game making five free throws and a Samuel's slam for the 91-72 final.
Leading the way for the Patriots was Gary, who finished with a career-high 22 points, while Duncan dished out a career-high seven assists to go along with 12 points. Samuel and Morton finished with 13 points apiece, while Colvin-Seldon chipped in 12 points and five rebounds. English netted ten points and three assists in the win.

The Patriots return to the court Thursday, January 11, when they host 15th-ranked Campbellsville in MSC action. Tipoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. and live video is available here, while live stats are available here.
