Once again, WMDJ Radio along with the Martin & Prestonsburg Dairy Queen is proud to present our 4th Annual "Ultimate Player of the Year" award during the upcoming 58th District Tournament to be held at South Floyd High School.
During the regular season, we have been honored to recognize 12 players for their efforts on the court as our "Star Performers of the Week". We have listed those players below as our version of an All-Conference team. I know we have left some well deserving players off our list, but we have only 12 weeks at our disposal. As a new country song by Bucky Covington says, "Not everyone made the team when we tried...We got disappointed, but that was all right." We have so many great athletes throughout the 58th District and to everyone, keep up the good work.
We have also listed our previous winners of the "Ultimate Player of the Year". This year's receipient of the UPY will receive a trophy, along with a $500 college scholarship to be presented after the district finals.
2006-2007 Star Performers Team:
Heather Dean - South Floyd
Lindsey Fields - Prestonsburg
Kayla Hall - South Floyd
Megan Hamilton - Betsy Layne
Sara Johnson - Allen Central
Katlin Lawson - Betsy Layne
Lindsey Martin - Betsy Layne
Megan Slone - Prestonsburg
Amanda Thacker - Allen Central
Jessica Toole - Allen Central
Chelsie Tuttle - South Floyd
Amber Whitaker - Prestonsburg
Previous Ultimate Player of the Year Winners:
2003-2004 Kim Clark - Betsy Layne
2004-2005 Becky Thomas - Allen Central
2005-2006 Alana Cline - Allen Central

Do they take into consideration who wins the district???

If I'm not mistaken, they give the award to a senior considering the rewards money and scholarship looking at past winners.
Kim Akers played on a district champion for Coach Casandra Akers.
Thomas and Cline were on district runner-up teams under Mark Martin.
with that being said, since Betsy Layne does not have a senior on the list, I am going to say Player of Year will be between Whitaker of Prestonsburg and if South Floyd were to beat Betsy Layne in the opening round Heather Dean would have to be considered...

I don't think it matters if the player is on a contender or not. They look for a senior who has shown ability and poise on the court, as well as displayed character off the court and outside of the classroom. It helps to be on a contender, because your team is given a bit more attention, but I don't think it's a big factor in deciding who gets the award.

The award is simply based on the kind of season they had this year - performance and sportsmanship. Also, they must be a senior to be considered for the award. That stipulation was added after the scholarship award came into play for us.

The 2006-2007 Ultimate Player of the Year Scholarship Award Winner is...
Amber Whitaker of Prestonsburg
Congrats Amber. She will receive a $500 college scholarship and was honored following last night's Girls District Tournament Final. Amber is a great player and displays both good sportsmanship and hard work on the basketball court. Again congrats to Amber.
