How does your school honor teams?
#1
Some schools will only hang banners in their gym and put pictures on their walls for State Championships.

Some schools will hang banners and pictures for Regional Champions.

A lot of the gyms I've been in (which is more than the average bear) will have a banner or banners (depending on how many titles they've won) just for District Championships.

Here's my thoughts on the matter. And when I say "Hang a Banner", that means either in the gym or on their specific sporting field.

- Hang banners for every sport that has won District Championships. Not runners-up, just the championship seasons.

- Hang an individual banner for each sport that wins a Team Regional Championship.

- Hang a banner separate for the specific team that makes it the state finals or wins the state championship.

- Any team that competes in the actual KHSAA state championship game/contest deserves a large, blown-up picture in the gym.

- Any individual that wins a KHSAA state championship deserves a large, blown-up picture in their gym.

And while we are at it. I think that if a school is consolidated, the schools that were closed to form the new school needs a banner with their original name, mascot and made from the school colors hanging in the current schools gym. These type of banners don't have to list their championships, but at least have that piece of history in the gym so those schools are not forgotten.

Because of family ties, I go to a lot of Scott County games. Scott County never hangs anything for district championships. They have also stopped hanging banners for regional championships. They hang banners and put up the big photographs of State Championship teams. Of their 3 State Runner-up teams, I think they have only put up a photograph of the 99 team that went 34-2 and was ranked #6 in USA Today. I wish they would have one big banner that just listed their regional championships and maybe have banners for the state champions and state runner-ups, maybe even the two teams that were in the final-four but didn't make it to the state championship game. Scott County also has nice banners hanging for their Mr. Basketballs and Miss Basketballs. They have two each of those.

I know Henry Clay only hangs banners in their gym for State Championship teams/seasons. They also have some retired jerseys in their gym.

You talk about a school that has been loaded with talent and great teams during the past decade, but can't get out of the region. Henry Clay has been snake bit the past 12 years. It seems like before this year they have perennially been loaded but just can't get over the hump. It seems like when they have their best teams, Scott County, Lexington Catholic, Madison Central or Dunbar is loaded as well.

This reminds me of the old James A. Cawood teams. So many years they were so good but never got over the hump.

No matter the sport and no matter what school... if a team or individual wins a KHSAA sanctioned state championship, they need to have a banner or large photo on the wall in their gym or specific sporting field.

Teams like Trinity or Scott County, that seems to win some type of state championship every year, might only hang a banner for state championships.

Making it to a state tournament for teams like Jenkins and Phelps, that means more to them than certain schools winning a state championship. Even a District championship means more than a state championship does to some schools.

Hazard they hang Banner for basketball and got pics. and the football team have the year they won district, region, state runner-up and state championship on the side of the dog house.

PCC i have not saw a new basketball banner in there the early 2000's. the only new banners in the gym now if from Track and Field and Cross Country.

Buckhorn have banner and a pic of the 1988 and 1989 teams that won region. i guess they got a banner and pic of last year that won region up now also.

The fact that very few state championships come to eastern Ky is the reason we recognize district and regional titles more I guess. I think how we honor teams has to be a local decision because the bar is set so much higher for the teams that compete for the title regularly. The idea of hanging banners that recognize teams making up a consolidated school is a good one I think. I'm probably in the minority but I also think basketball should have class titles the same as football to even the playing field. I know some will give good reasons why we dont

No way the KHSAA will ever change "The Greatest Show in Hoops." The Sweet 16 in the Flagship event for the KHSAA.

Should basketball be classed... maybe.

The All "A" Classic is great for our state. Even though it's not the actual state championship, every region competes. IMO, that makes it matter more than just a regular tournament. Everybody knows it's not the real state championship, but without basketball classes..... this will probably be the closet thing we see.

When 1A Paintsville won the Sweet 16 in 1996, this proved it can be done. Then 2A Shelby Valley did it again in 2010.
Those are the two smallest schools in the last 20 seasons (1996-2016) to win the State Championship.

I agree the sweet 16 is too popular to ever change. I also think the consolidation of schools might eventually lead to a local school winning the title. Outside of that the only option I see is the dreaded R word lol

Don't forget Mason County. I think they were 2A at the time they won it.

The KHSAA scoreboard from 2003 & 2008 says Mason County played in Class 3A in football.

Here in Eastern Ky we hung a banner for District Champs and put all the years we won it,
we also hung a Regional Champs banner for every year we won that because it was special and meant we got to go to the sweet 16.
We also hung a banner for winning the All "A" Regional championship, and probably would of hung an All "A" State champ banner if we would of been lucky enough to win that.
Like someone else said above, definitely more to winning Districts and Region here in Eastern Ky than up state. I'm sure that is why we hang more banners.

It's going to vary from school to school. Expectations and tradition. Sports teams with no class system basically have three levels of teams:
1. Those that can compete for a state championship 5-8% maybe? (Less than that volleyball, soccer)
2. Those that can compete for a regional championship 25-33% maybe?
3. Those that can make it to the regional tournament now and again, maybe advance to the semi-finals, but no real hope of ever advancing to state.

Individual state winners should have a picture, definitely in the trophy case. Again, it's going to depend on the school. A class 'a' size school with little to no team success, may decide to have a banner and picture of a kid that excels in golf, bowling, wrestling, x-country, track, etc.

tell me this if a school is 3A in football (Breathitt Co.), or 2A in football (Leslie Co.) play in the ALL A. this is just from the 14th region. guess other region have team playing in the ALL A in basketball that played 2A or 3A in football.

Figures are done differently. I think it's based on a schools attendance figures in grades 10-12 from the spring semester of the prior year. Seems like the number is around 425<.

Classes in football is just based on the number of total teams divided into six classes. Lowest 1/6 number of teams constitute Class A.
