BUCKHORN, KY. (WYMT) - The Buckhorn Wildcats won the 14th Region Championship for the first time since 1989 this season. Wednesday night, the team, coaches and community members celebrated at their postseason awards banquet.

Buckhorn took the state by storm in 2015 when they went to the All 'A' State Tournament in Frankfort, a few of them sporting mullets.

Since then, the small school in the mountains has added more and more fans. One of those fans was in attendance as a guest speaker Wednesday, Kentucky Sports Radio founder and host Matt Jones.

Jones praised the basketball team for its accomplishments on the court, but challenged them to be just as great off the court. He encouraged them to not be held back by the negative stereotypes that people have with the mountains and eastern Kentucky.

"I've lived in Lexington, Louisville, Raleigh, Charlotte, Washington D.C. but nothing is like the mountains. It's the best place, in my opinion in the world. I'm so proud of you guys and what you've accomplished." Said Jones.

Growing up in Middlesboro, he said he related to the tight-knit community of Buckhorn.

"I was really honored when they asked me to come. I fell in love with this team, watching them, of course it started with the hair, but I also just liked the fact that there aren't a lot of communities like this anymore. It's a small community, the school hasn't been consolidated yet, and the fact that they had success. I loved watching how the community rallied around it. So, when they asked me to come, I was glad to do, and it's always great to come to the mountains. I had never been to Buckhorn before, you have to want to get here, it's quite a drive, but I'm really glad to be here." Said Jones.
