TheTigersEye Wrote:I agree with you on the numbers. If 70 kids are playing football then there's no excuse not to be over .500. Hard to fathom pulling 70 boys out of the halls and not being able to compete in a few football games. I have us beating Rowan, Russell County, and West Jessamine this season regardless. If numbers are that great I believe we should also be throwing in wins over South Laurel, East Jessamine, and Rockcastle.
I don't expect to see a win over Rockcastle County this year.
You could pull a hundred players out there but it doesn't necessarily mean you'll have a better team.
I forget the coach's name, but I remember stories about several great teams in the 80s with around 25 on the varsity.

It would have to provide the tigers with a better team. Even if some of these guys don't start then you would think they could at least help in practice which would help in the long run.

Boys didn't someone say yall had 8 running clocks put on you last year? If this was the case you aint beatin Rock or E. Jessamine, you might win 2. Not trying to bash yall just being realistic.

Yeah mark Rock down as a W. That one slipped away too. Rock played Wayne Co within 8 and 3 with both games being played at Wayne. Wayne had a running clock on us with 10 minutes to go in the 2nd.
Top 2 offensive threats are gone in Wolfe and Sizemore, lost Napier and Smith off the line, and Lyttle who played both ways and earned a scholarship to UPike. Granted, there is a very talented group of freshmen coming in, but the teams that was pounding us last year was young and return most of their guys.
As for a prediction, seeing how the only 2 teams we beat, we beat at home and they were a combined 1-21. and every other team was a running clock except Rowan and we all read about what happened with them. I am going to say 1 win unless we find a speedy receiver that Sexton can scramble around and find from time to time.

I don't want to be that guy.... but Rowan was a running clock to, that's the game we didn't force a single punt. Maybe this years team will be more committed and show some fight down the stretch and we will close the deal on a few of those that slipped away. I once again will say if you have 60-70 kids out you reload not rebuild. Teams have went to 10-0 from 0-10 before, why can't we have that big of a turnaround this season? Tigermania will be running wild and I'll save you guys a seat on the wagon.

Rowan was not a running clock. We were down 33-18 at the half, Alevras scored and got a 2 point conversion in the 3rd to cut it to 33-26. they went on to score 22 unanswered. 55-26
I hope they are more committed, with the right leadership Clay could turn it around in a couple years. With that said I still believe we are a couple years away.

I apologize, I just knew we didn't have any stops that night. If we can't beat Rowan this year we aint winning a game. Losing Alevras hurt us. He definitely would have been another weapon I think.

We didn't have any stops. I just hope they are competitive this year.

See things for what they are. If 70 kids are out that shows much more interest in the program. By all accounts this years freshman class is a good group. That's a good thing. Regardless of wins and losses, things seem to be on the upswing. Don't get the cart in front of the horse. First things first.

I think we this many kids out you can let those freshmen focus on freshmen and JV teams and keep them together as a group until they are juniors. It's highly unlikely that a freshmen group is really going to step right in and compete at the varsity level immediately and most will get frustrated when the loses start to pile up if they are playing varsity football. It's just hard to ensure their is quality coaching goin on at the middle school and grade school level as I have heard that Combs doesn't really have the control he needs to have over the feeder programs.

Well how are we looking? The Season is coming up fast with scrimmages next week and a down and out Rowan County coming in for game 1. Are the numbers holding steady?

I've heard we are more around 35-40 out right now. Would like to see at least a .500 type year this fall.

From what I am currently seeing...there are between 40-50 kids out. I don't know who came up with the number of "70", but that is a pipe dream in Clay County right now. Going to have to have a few winning seasons to see those kind of numbers. As far as this year's freshman class....I hate to see several of them thrown to the wolves so soon! But hey...what do you do when your freshmen are better than your juniors and seniors??? I'm just worried that those freshmen will try to play a freshman, JV, AND varsity game in a weeks time. 3 games in 1 week = injuries

Players are not permitted to play 3 games in one week under KHSAA bylaws.

Nearly 70 is coming from Coach Combs in the newspaper a couple weeks ago. He said the roster was growing by the day. I think you still let them play freshmen and JV because under no circumstances can freshmen compete in varsity games and have a shot of winning very many so it's not like you would be throwing away the season. Is there a chance we go 0fer this year?

Who are you currently seeing that could start varsity right away? I am only seeing one or two of the freshmen coming in that's anywhere close to being ready to step on a varsity field and that's just as a role guy. Could be another long one boys if our numbers have already dropped that much.

People always talk about "the talent walking the halls". In most cases there is a reason that they are "walking the hall". Football takes WORK, that is why I hesitate to say there is lots of help out there in "the halls". Back those that are playing and working to improve the program.

When I Coached I always told my Assistants to coach the ones there, not worry about the ones not there. We did work the halls and talk to kids every day. I met the busses every day and talked to them about playing.

I'm not talking about you walterwhite but some these clay poster on here makes me think they want Clay to failed. Maybe I'm just reading to much into it. Loved to see Coach Comb,Coaching Staff and players to have a good year in 4A. :Cheerlead

Clay will be better when the boys going into the 8th grade get to high school. As long as those boys stay together and the politics is left out of the coaching decisions. They got a new middle school coach. I believe you will see a turn in around in the next few years at the high school level as long as the politics don't mess it up.

Don't mean that the last middle coach was bad just think the new guy and these group of 8th graders are working hard and a great group of kids.

It will be hard to top the winning tradition that has been evident at CCMS for awhile but there is a great run of talent coming through that anybody should be able to win with at this point. Who is the new coach? Didn't realize the last one quit. Any chance they can pull Reid on board? He is a proven winner.
08-11-2016, 07:11 AM
The new coach is Fultz and yes the last coach bird was good and I've seen some of these 8th graders he's got and they have dominated every team in the region at baseball and basketball so I'm just assuming they could make a good run this year at football. I don't know to much about them just that they have whipped up on everyone of us around this area in other sports.

Scott Reid should have been the Middle School Coach.

Did he apply for the job when it opened up? Just curious.

I don't think there was an interview process or posting. I could be wrong though.

The middle school has always been pretty good. It doesn't seem to follow these guys to the High school though. The last two middle school coaches quit in High school if that tells you anything about the hiring. And I heard the Head Football Coach @ the high school wanted Reid. Good Ole Clay County!!!

I heard Reid didn't want the job.
