Was reading the thread about a "15th region all star team of current players" and people were giving their opinions. Any opinions on an all-time all star team of players who played at 15th region schools?
Here's mine:
Center---Jr Vanhoose (Paintsville)
Power Forward---Todd May (Virgie)
Small Forward---John Pelphrey (Paintsville) or Porter Powers (Auxier)
Shooting Guard---Kelly Coleman (Wayland)
Point Guard---Ervin Stepp (Phelps?)
Bench:
Jody Thompson (Feds Creek)
Todd Tackett (Paintsville)
Jeremy Slone (Allen Central)
Bill Cassidy (Inez)
I know full well I am leaving some very deserving players off my list (oversights). There were some very good players at other schools as well (such as Meade and Oil Springs). I just don't know their names. These were the players that came to my mind. Want to hear your opinion.
What about an all star 15th region coach?

Here's a few old timers to throw in the mix.
Donny Butcher - Meade Memorial High School, played at Pikeville College and played in the NBA with Detroit and New York Knicks.
Charlie Osborne - Flat Gap High School, Charlie is currently the 2nd all-time leading scorer in the state of Ky. behind King Kelly Coleman, and play at Western Kentucky University and was Elected to the WKU Hall of Fame. Charlie was drafted into the NBA but injured his knee during the pre-season, ending his basketball career.
Carroll Burchett - Flat Gap High School, Carroll played for Rupp at UK in the early 60's and started his Jr. and Sr. years at UK.
Bob and Pat Talent - Maytown High School, one of these brothers played for UK during the 60's.

This may get me run out of town, but while Todd was a great player and went on to UK, I don't think he belongs on this team. I just think there was more talent (w/less attitude) before his time. He was great, but there was better. I agree w/JR and Pelphrey though. Neither were as athletic (moves) as TT, but both were fundamentally sound and played with their head. You never saw any fantastic spins, wild dunks, etc, but they got the ball in the hole and in the end, that's all that counts.

I agree! While Todd Tackett was a phenomenal shooter and would easily start on any team at any given point in time, I don't think he would make the cut if all of the players from the past could show up and try out for an all-star team. The talent pool would just be too much!
We've had some pretty good players from the 15th over the years. It would be hard to choose an all-star team from the fabulous players we have had. But Firetubbyplease has a good start on a lineup.

Thanks for throwing those names out there---knew there were talented players from those schools---but didn't know their names. Thanks!

Don't know about that. But, I sure would throw a vote towards Robbie Russell.

If it was Jeremy Hall from AC he DOES NOT need to be there. He was a good player, but he had issues on and off the court. I don't think he should be so "high" on the list of 15th greats. If you include him, then I would also argue for Brian Lyon and Jerry Pelphrey.

Bob Tallent played at UK but left after his sophomore season and had a great career at , I believe , George Washington. He was unable to get along with Coach Rupp. He and his brothers- Pat & Mike [I think that name is correct] led Maytown to some glory years.

Meade Memorial had a couple of great ones in the mid sixties- Alvin Ratliff & Stevie Butcher[ The same Steve Butcher who is superintendent at Wolfe Co.]
01-02-2007, 09:26 PM
King Kelly Colman

JR Vanhoose was.
If you never saw JR play I'm not sure you can make an educated argument against him.

No, he wasn't. But he was the most important!
