Highlands and Beechwood rank at the top.
Pikeville would be right behind. Something to be proud of, but so is beating a team 14 of 15 years, right?

My point was that our Football team is doing good and would be ranked in the top 25 in state and our high school is very poor.. Ranked 178 out of 227.. Time to fire the head coach of the school .. ( PRINCIPAL OR SUPERINTENDENT)

I have a lot of respect for Highlands, St.Xand Trinity both outstanding..

Football is great, but academics should always be put first. Even for kids who plan on going to college on athletic scholarships, they have to maintain a GPA. And last I checked, "State Champ" won't mean much on a resume.

Bobcat4years Wrote:I seen where Corbin and Whitley are the top two in our region..
Corbin has almost always been the standard in this area for test scores. They have continually received very high scores. Corbin's middle school has always been one of the best in the state.
Over the past 10 years, Whitley has followed the same mold with twice as many student and its paid off big time. Anytime a school who was once run by the state scores distinguished you know the entire program is being run correctly.
The thing is, the two schools are run completely different with different structures, curriculums, time frames, etc. and both have made it work which tells me anyone can.
These two are definitely the go to for education in this region now.
Overall, I think every school in this region is heads and shoulders above what it was 20 years ago. Even Lynn Camp has made some strides this year it appears. When something is not working, you have to make that change.
One thing I do want to point out is every year I see these scores released there are always one or two schools that stand out that makes you wonder how they pulled it off. I wont mention who I think they are this year because as far as we know they are 100% legit and are worthy of there success, but there are some scores from some district that are hard to believe.

Athletics and Academics aren't the same.
Schools should strive to be the best in both.
I too would love to see championships but seeing as to how almost every county in this state is riddled with uneducated welfare and food stamp recipients makes me want them educated a lot more.
To put it brutally honest, there are a lot of dumb people here that do not want a better life and are content with what they are. That attitude has got to change and its short changing the kids if you repeat them threw the same cycle there useless parents have taken.
The population on this side of the state is dwindling and dwindling fast. Ive never seen the economy East of I75 in KY be as bad as it is right now. Except for a few anomalies, there isn't anything to achieve here in life. Unless someone fixes it, and does it quickly, people will leave. Why stay? I myself with a job like mine that was once 100% secure and safe now has many pondering the ideal of a move out of state.

One must keep in mind that you are only dealing with the government schools.
10-03-2015, 03:00 PM
Anywhere you have affluence and wealth concentrated in one place, you will find success in both academics and athletics. Schools with higher per capita incomes have more involved parents with higher expectations and involvement, which results in students who give better effort and expect more from themselves. Transient bubbles might happen in certain schools with certain sports due to exceptional coaching at times, but over time, I think you'll find this is clearly more rule than exception. Schools in affluent areas (Highlands, Beechwood, St. X, Trinity, et al) or even schools in poorer areas where the higher-income families choose to send their children (Pikeville, Ashland, et al) will do better in all spheres of measurement. Fair? No. But what in life is?

So much federal Gov't involvement with public schools that is basically impossible to replicate results at private schools.

Agree totally with Gut..
We judge coaches on win/loss
Adminstrators should be judge on test scores..
State championship will fade away, a quality education is for life..

Test scores really don't mean anything in my book. That's all schools have become. teaching kids how to take tests not teach real life knowledge. Till they get that college/trade school sheep skin it really doesn't matter.

Every single school district should either have a vocational school or readily available access to one.
Not every kid wants to go to college. Not every kid needs to go to college, but it is my firm belief that they either need the typical collegiate paths offered and/or vocational skills which can also lead to being every bit (if not more on the big scale) as contributing to our society.

Amazing the disparity in schools within the Jefferson County school district.
