Their Coach is Butch Joplin
I anticipate once again the Hornets will struggle with numbers but will fight for the 4 seed in their District.

Maybe they should put a Golden Corral in Phelps. The numbers would sky rocket!

They already have Hornets Restaurant, which is spectacular food!

I hate to see things the way they are with Phelps. But with things the way they are in that part of the state, financially, things dont seem to be getting any better. What I hate to see and I dont wanna start a big discussion about the playoffs, bc they are what they are. But to see a team have to travel 3-4 hours, like they did to Raceland, knowing full well what the outcome would be is unfair. Especially to a school from an area as depleted as Phelps. Its not cheap, its not fair, to anyone involved. I hope something happens and interest in football sky rockets and they become a contender every year...but sadly i dont see that happening. Maybe ever.

Getting a coach like Joplin is a big win for Phelps. Joplin led the Hornets to a 10-0 record in the 80's and has had an outstanding career with teams like Matewan. The Pike County BOE is committed to supporting its students and finally this season the Hornets will play football in Phelps. Phelps will play its home opener 9/18 against Montcalm, WVa. The push to find a proven coach and with monetary support from the central office may mean good things over in Phelps.

Phelps playing at Belfry middle school is as long as a drive as their district opponents.

this year the last place team in that district will be placed in district 6 with Raceland, Fairview, and Paintsville

Small numbers have been a challenge over there for a long time. Hopefully Coach Joplin can get more kids involved with the program.

I hope their numbers go up as well but, last year they were the poster child for why their should not be 4 playoff teams in each district.

I can not remember the year.
I do remember it was my first time coming down to Pikeville.
Phelps seemed to have a pretty decent roster that year.
Sad to see them going through the bad times they are.
