Well, we are winding down towards the end of the season when most 1a games begin to become blowouts. We still have a great week of games lined out for this week though. This week could rank right up there with some of the best this year. We have some good out of state games as well as great annual matchups. So without further ado, here is the top ten this week:
1) #6 Beechwood 1a @ #3 Covington Catholic 4a
You talk about a traditional matchup of two traditional powers here, both with something to prove, this is it. #6 Beechwood has gone on a 3 game roll after getting off to a rocky start. They could use this game to further advance their team towards being a playoff power. They come into this one with a record of 3-2 with a Lit rating of 112.9. They average a game score this year of 41-22. Covington Catholic will come in desperately wanting to avenge themselves for a beat down suffered at the hands of #1 Highlands Friday. They come in off a loss to the Bluebirds in similar fashion of what they did at this point last year. Cath comes in with a record of 3-2 as well and a Lit Rating of 130.4. They average a game score of 27-24. Last year Cov Cath came into Beechwood in a similar fashion off a loss to Highlands with almost the exact same margin. They took it to the Tigers in Fort Mitchell by a score of 28-7. Beechwood feels they are better than last year and this is a chance for them to prove that to the rest of the world. This should be a great game in a great atmosphere.
2) #8 Prestonburg 2a @ #7 Hazard 1a
This is a great matchup of two teams that figure to be powers in their perspective classifications. The two have both lost to the same team in Pikeville. Both of those losses were in come back fashion. In my mind it would appear that Hazard was the better team of the two and it did not turn out that way on the field, due to the tossing of the head coach. This will be a chance for Hazard to prove my thoughts. Prestonburg comes in at 5-1 with a Lit rating of 102.3. They average a game score of 43-13. Hazard comes in at 4-1 and has a Lit rating of 101.4. Their average game score is 43-25. There are a lot of similarities between these two this year. Last year the Bulldogs went on the road to Prestonburg and beat the Blackcats 24-14. This too should be a great game in a very tough place to steal a win.
3) #5 Frankfort 1a @ First Baptist Academy, Fl (Naples, Fl)
This could be another great chance for a Ky team to display to the world that we do play a little ball here. This appears to be a great matchup. Frankfort will come into this one with a 4-1 record and a Lit rating of 102.8. They average a game score of 36-21. Their only loss to a crosstown rival that plays in 5a. First Bap comes into this one at 2-2. They average a game score of 31-19. Another great opportunity for a Ky School to prove that we belong. Good luck on the travel and have a great game.
4) Paris @ Bellevue
This too appears to be a great game between two pretty successful teams in 1a. Paris comes into this one with a record of 4-1 and a Lit rating of 65.1. They average a game score of 30-14. Bethlehem comes in at 3-2 with a Lit Rating of 72.8. They average a game score of 31-21. There are a lot of similarities in this one as there was last year between these two. Last year Paris won this one at home 35-33. This could shape up to be just as good of a game as the last meeting.
5) #14 Lexington Christian 2a @ #10 Paintsville 1a
This should be another great one between two teams that figure to have a lot to say about what goes on come playoff time in their perspective classes. LCA comes in with a record of 3-2, off a tough loss to another 1a school. They have a Lit rating of 93.4. They average a game score of 31-26. Paintsville comes in at 4-1 with a Lit rating of 68.5. They average a game score of 36-18. These two appear to be pretty similar as well. Should be an electric atmosphere for this one.
6) Pike Co Central 3a @ Fairview 1a
This should be a great game between two teams that on paper appear to be very similar. Pike Co Cent comes in at 3-2 with a Lit rating of 83.7. They average a game score of 26-28. Fairview comes in also at 3-2 with a Lit rating of 76.8. They average a game score of 37-26. Last year Fairview won on the road in a close one 44-37. This one should be just as good.
7) Campbellsville 1a @ #13 Danville 2a
This too appears to be a great match up between two teams that appear to be on a very similar course. Campbellsville is being mentioned a lot as a team on the rise and that could have something to say about the landscape in 1a. They come in at 3-2 with a Lit rating of 72.4. They average a game score of 28-18. Danville also is being talked about as the dark horse in 2a. They too come in at 3-2 on the year with a Lit rating of 97.6. They average a game score of 27-19. The Ads better not take this team too lightly. This should be a great one.
8) Holmes 4a @ Bellevue 1a
This appears to be another great one. That is if you take in the fact that Holmes is a big school and the similarities in the Lit ratings. Holmes comes in on a disappointing note at 1-4 on the year with a Lit rating of 69.1. They average a game score of 13-32. Bellevue is also a little down compared to last year but comes in with a 3-3 record and a Lit rating of 63.7. They average a game score of 31-21. This would be a good chance for the little school to put it to another big school team. Last year Holmes won this one at home by a narrow margin at 42-36. I cant wait to see the results of this one.
9) South Floyd 1a @ Betsy Lane 2a
This appears to be a good matchup between two evenly matched teams as well. South Floyd comes in at 3-2 with a Lit rating of 33.0. They average a game score of 34-25. Betsy Lane comes in at 3-2 with a Lit rating of 50.5. South Floyd is hopeful of tightening the margin in this one as Betsy Lane won this matchup last year 50-12. It should be a fun one to watch as well.
10) Pendleton Co 4a @ Nicholas Co 1a
This is another good opportunity for the small school to hang one on the bigger schools. Pendleton comes in at 2-4 with a Lit rating of 34.5. They average a game score of 23-36. Nicholas Co comes in at 1-4 with a slightly higher Lit rating at 38.1. They average a game score of 19-33. Pendleton won this matchup last year at home 35-21. This too should be a good one to watch.
Wow, I really like this week in 1a. These games from 1-10 appear to be pretty evenly matched games. You have got to love that. There you go, kick it around and see what you think.
