Game Report Cincinnati Mt. Healthy 40 Beechwood 27
#1
The night cap of the triple header in Cincinnati yesterday was a battle, no make that a war pitting two very talented teams against each other.

From my great state was The Fighting Owls of Mt. Healthy and from the great state of Kentucky was the machine known as Beechwood.

Things got started with a thunder for Beechwood, when Kyle Fieger hooked up with Jeremy Burns for 35-yards. The drive ended three plays and one yard later, as the fighting Owls was not going to let a lighting quick score take place just minutes into the game.

A big reason for the drive ending was a 2-yards loss by the Tigers, when they suffered a two yard loss on a play where Fieger recovered a Tigers fumble.

David Montgomery, the very underrated quarterback for Mt. Healthy connected with DeShawn Jackson for a 16-yard gain, with 7:09 remaining in the quarter.

Brayden Combs , a 6-5 230 pound Jr. swatted a pass away by Montgomery forcing the Fighting Owls into 4TH and 11 situation, with 4:49 showing on the clock.

Eleven seconds later Hiavier Pitts broke free for a forty-yard score, but a block in the back negated the score but allowed the Cincinnati team to keep the ball.

1:57 was the time remaining when one of the most talented players I have seen this season, Brett Slusher sacked Montgomery for a 10-yard loss forcing the Owls into a 3rd and 21 spot.

1:26 into was left in the first frame when Brett (MR. MONEY IN THE BANK) Slusher swatted a Montgomery pass away saving a Mt. Healthy touchdown.

Slusher was not done show casing his skills just :26 left into the 2nd quarter he planted Pitts hard into the turf for a 8-yard loss.

Jackson would haul in a beautifully thrown ball by Montgomery to go 51-yards for the games first score. The point after kick by Kendre Smith was blocked by, you guessed it, Slusher. So with 10:31 left in the half the score stayed at, 6-0 Fighting Owls.

Fieger would be sacked by Devonta Johnson for a 2-yard loss, with 10:00 left in the half. The Fighting Owls defense seemed to have a lot of speed, some size and a know how to do what their coaches were asking them to do.

The Tigers got another complication from Fieger to Jeremy Burns, with 9:26 left in the half, but Burns put the ball on the turf and Danny Johnson from Mt. Healthy came up with it. At this point of the game it was like watching the Tigers take a step or two forward and then taking a step or two backwards.

At the 8:21 mark of the half Montgomery sprinted for 18 yards showing he has so get up and go and was not afraid to show that skill.

Mt Healthy scored again with 7:05 left int he half, when Montgomery ran in from 13-yards out. Montgomery put some icing on the cake by scoring a two point conversion run after the touchdown. The drive went for 38-yards and last for 38-yards.

14-0 Mt Healthy.

With 6"47 left in the half Fieger again hit Burns, this time for 35-yards and a big first down.
The offense was shut down a short time later and the Fighting Owls was set to get the ball again.

Montgomery would hit a 41-yard bomb to DeShawn Jackson with only 3:45 left in the half. The nine play 65-yard drive ended with Pitts scoring from six-yards out. Smith made it 21-0 with his point after kick.

The last minute of the half could have taken everything out of the Tigers but as we would see in the 2nd half this team has no quit in it as they played their rear ends off. The first play that could have killed the Tigers came when Slusher proved he was man not machine by dropping a pass in the end zone. the last one came when Fieger was sacked for a 6-yard loss by Milan Lanier and Elijah Williams.

:15 seconds into the 2nd half the Fighting Owls got a 15-yard gain by Pitts. Then facing a third and sixteen the Owls converted, when Montgomery connected with DeShawn Jackson again. Montgomery would cap this scoring drive off when he hit pay dirt from six yards out. The point after increased the lead to, 28-0 with 8:52 showing on the clock.

The drive took 8 plays and totaled 51-yards.

Beechwood use the feet of Burns, who carried the ball a few times to work the ball down field. Then on the tenth play of the drive Fieger hit Jonathan Stokes for a 11-yard score.Mario German made it a, 28-7 score with his point after kick, with 4:34 left in the third.

Beechwood lined up in punt formation with 1:33 left in the quarter, but instead of punting the ball Joe Studer took off on for a first down run and then got 15 additional yards when Mt,Healthy was called for a personal foul. Just :15 seconds later Studer scored on a 35-yard run and after the point after we had a, 28-14 game. This drive went for 70-yards and took just five plays.

With Uncle Moe clearly on the Tigers side I am sure the Fighting Owls knew they needed something special and needed it as soon as possible. That is just what they got when Pitts to the ensuing kickoff 80-yards and would have scored if not for a big play by Grant Plageman, who caught the speedster at the 14.

Pitts ended the short 3-play 14-yard drive with a five yard run. The point after was wide left leaving the score,34-14 Fighting Owls with :23.3 left in the quarter.

Beechwood would again go on a nice long drive doing whatever the defense gave them and then on the drives tenth play of the drive Fieger hooked up with Studer on a nice looking 27-yard pass play. The point after was no good.

34-20 Fighting Owls with 9:39 left in the game.

The Tigers defense roared loudly and proudly as they shut down the potent offense of Mt. Healthy and got the ball back for their own explosive offense.

With 5:48 left in this epic battle of powerful teams Slusher took of on a very nice looking 47-yard run.
Then at the 5:19 mark of the final frame it was Fieger and #37 Studer teaming up again for a six-yard score, with Studer making a diving catch for the score. The point after kick made this a 7 point game, 34-27. The drive took five plays and went for fifty-nine-yards.

With 4:14 left Beechwood forced a punt when Grant Plageman had tight coverage on his man and deflected the ball away from him.

The game had a gigantic change of Momentum when Mt. Healthy got a interception. I apologize for not knowing who picked it off, but the Fighting Owls jerseys were hard to read from up in the press box, for me. The pick looked to come from #8Comist or #9 Kenneth English, with 3:39 left.

The ensuing drive took 5-plays totaling 35-yards. Scoring on a 1-yard run was, Montgomery.
The point after kicked was tipped by Burns leaving the score,40-27

The Tigers still refused to quit and with about a minute left Fieger hit Studer for a 40-yard gain and then with :36 left Fieger hit Burns for a 6-yard score. The point after made this a 40-34.

The Tigers attempted a onside type kick but the Fighting Owls recovered it and then ran the clock out to secure their hard fought victory.

40-34 final can a mode change this?

Also it should be 5 td not 4 in the stat line for Beechwood

This was a great game for both teams

Mt. Healthy was 2 minutes away from beating the eventual D2 champions Loveland until a 3rd and long that set up a Loveland TD, then a fumble recovery for a TD ended Mt. Healthy's season. They needed to get that bitter taste out of their mouth

For Beechwood, Mt. Healthy is almost exactly the type of team Mayfield and Frankfort are. Very good test to open the year on.

Sounds like Beechwood has a very good bunch this year.
