Best boy's coach not to...
#1
Thinking about some great coaches that never won a Sweet 16 or even got a team to the tournament.

Hard to think of many coaches better than Rodney Woods that don't have a Sweet 16 championship. Jimmy John Owens and that crew just about got it done in '89 and this group may be his last legit shot.

As for coaches that never or haven't made it to the Sweet 16, Dinky Phipps at Barbourville sticks out for me. Nice little program for a long time, but always just a little short. The Bobby McWilliams bunch in the mid 80's could've won the 13th Region in a lot of seasons, but that was the middle of Clay's dominance.

Who are some of the coaches that you would put on this list?

John Collins

Jon Collins (Breathitt)
Jon Bentley (Estill)
John Noble (Buckhorn)
Brian Hall (Powell) (Had a team that could have made it to state a few years back)

Has Coach Shannon Hoskins or Robert Hammonds ever been to the Sweet 16?

Hammonds was the coach when West Jessamine went in 09'.

Larry Gritton 20+ years at Oneida Baptist. Won 400 + games at Oneida Baptist. The 77-78 team With Roger Caldwell, Don Gray, David Mills and Ben Franklin beat Valley that year and Valley won State Tourney.

John Collins will surely make it in the 1-2 years remaining in his tenure at Breathitt.

^^^Is no such thing as a sure thing in basketball. Maybe in 2 years after Knott gets done 4 peating Wink

Cellking,
That's a good call on Coach Gritton. I'd add John Wilson at Red Bird. Both of those guys put together some good teams without much to work with.

Danny Adams from Magoffin County. The man could flat out teach defense. Made it to the finals in '84 and lost to a very good Johnson Central team on a last second shot by Harry Meek.

The best coach that never got to the Sweet 16, actually never had winning record as Kentucky High School coach was John Wooden.

Not many coaches Avg. 20+ win's a season for 20 years like Larry Gritton did at Oneida Baptist. He also was a fine Man.

Eddie Whitaker

Bill Smallwood comes to mind, he always had competitive teams at Berea Community, and since he left they have been awful.

Wade Upchurch

Rod Rhodes

To put Mr. Woods on this list is a home town call. If you ever watch his teams coaching is not why they win. Talent only takes them so far and the lack of coaching is why it has been one and done most of the time at the state tournament. Fans will blast me but that is why they are fans and sitting at home this week not in Rupp.
