Ashland 63 Lewis Co 61 Final
12-05-2013, 11:27 PM
Lewis County battled the team most observers have tabbed as the team to beat in the 16th Region, the Ashland Blazer Kittens, to the wire in the Jungle on Thursday evening, but fell just short.
Sophomore guard Jaycey Fite, who drained five 3-pointers in the back-and-forth contest, had an open look from the top of the key that could have knotted the game at 62-all with 15 seconds to play, but it hit the front of the rim and the Kittens claimed the rebound and escaped with a 63-61 victory.
Lewis coach Jay Fite, who called a timeout with 19 ticks left on the clock to set up a possible tying shot, said he couldn't have asked for a better look at the end.
"Jaycey told me she didn't want to shoot it from there, but I'll take that shot anytime," he said.
The Lions bench boss was pleased with his team's overall performance against the talented Kittens.
"Especially early in the year, you don't know what to expect, but for our kids to really believe they can play with a team that's proven champions, it's encouraging," Fite said. "We withstood an 18-1 run in the first quarter and we didn't let it affect us. In the past, we may have let that bother us, but I never saw that look tonight. We didn't panic and we clawed back into it.
"I saw a lot of things the kids did tonight that we can build on. We were solid rebounding and won the boards 40-22. It wasn't just our bigs either, the guards were stepping in and getting rebounds too. I was concerned with that before the game because we were playing a zone."
The Lady Lions got off to a positive start, taking a 9-2 lead 3:19 into the fray after junior center Savannah Anderson's third basket of the quarter.
Ashland responded with the 18-1 blitz, which began with a jumper from junior forward Shelby Gransberry. Gransberry scored 10 of her 14 points in the opening frame. Another junior forward, Haley Sue Foutch, made all four of her field goal attempts in the quarter and totaled a team-high 17 points.
The Kittens took advantage of seven Lewis turnovers in the quarter, which Fite noted as well.
"We just made too many mistakes and you can't do that against a team as good as Ashland," he said. "But we took much better care of the ball in the second half when we had seven in the entire half. Emily Frye (Lewis junior point guard) has really grown into that role of being our general. She makes us tick and even though she missed a couple shots in the second quarter, she just decided to get everyone else involved."
Frye, who scored 10 points, including three buckets in the final 1:43, was effective at getting Fite involved on the outside and Anderson, the 6-foot-1 post player, involved on the inside.
Fite finished with 17 points and connected on five of her nine 3-point attempts. Anderson, who posted a double-double with 28 points and 14 rebounds, was 12-for-20 from the floor, but just 4-for-12 from the foul line.
"Savannah is usually a very good free throw shooter, but she just had a difficult time there tonight," Fite said. "But she did a good job of catching and finishing against their bigs inside."
Ashland's all-state guard, 5-11 junior Alexis Robinson, scored 16 hard-earned points. After a 1-for-5 shooting first half, she began the third quarter with a 3-pointer and finished the night 5-12 from the field and 5-6 from the stripe.
The Lady Lions return to action against another strong 16th Region team, East Carter, in the EKC tournament at the Lewis County Middle School on Saturday.
