GAME REPORT Lewis County 26 Greenup County 20
#1
Last night at Green Up County High School the football season got underway, with the home team Musketeers hosting Lewis County.

The first big hit of the season came from Rusty Wells, a 5-10 165 pound sophomore, who lit up Chase Parker a 5-8 160 pound wide receiver.

With 9:27 left in the opening quarter, Isaac Weddington, the 6-3 200 talented quarterback for Lewis county connected with a wide open Jordan Davis (5-8, 160)junior wide receiver for a big gain.

Lewis county would end the fifteen play, seventy three yard drive, with a twelve yard pass from Weddington to Jared Stapleton (6-3 165)wide receiver. The point after was good by, Davis to make the score, 7-0, with 4:02 left on the opening quarter clock.

With 1:49 left in the quarter Ryan Byrd(5-10 175 sophomore)broke a tackle and picked up a Green Up County first down, with a run of eleven yards.

The 13 play seventy four drive would come to a close for Green Up County, when Byrd broke another tackle and hit pay dirt from fourteen yards out. Chris Haney (6-0 200) tied things up with the point after.

There was still 8:53 left in the half when Drew Johnson ( 6-1 215 Junior) sacked Weddington for a seven yard loss.

Weddington would have his passed pick off, with 7:06 left in the half by, Jr Josh Barney (5-8 165 Junior)

The Lewis County defense would get a sack by 6-1 200 Jordan Hunt when he got to Jared Hunt (6-1 175 sophomore) The game was still locked at seven at this point, with 6:53 left in the half.

Green Up County set up in Punt formation with 6:13 left in the first hoping to pin Lewis County back deep in their own territory, but a bad snap resulted in huge loss and gave the visitors a first down at the Green Up County thirty three yard line.

The Green Up County defense put Lewis County into a fourth and one position, with 4:21 left in the half but the Lions elected to go for it on fourth down instead of punting the ball away. The call was a hand off to Mason Thurman, a 5-8 250 pound running back, who plowed his way to a first down.

Weddington, who only threw fourteen passes all night, would complete one of those passes to Chase Parker (5-8-160 senior) that ended with a sixteen yard gain. Weddington throws a really nice ball and looked very accurate all night.

The Lions would end the eight play thirty three yard drive, with a five yard bull dozing like run from, Thurman. The point after by, Davis increased the lead to, 14-7 with 3:17 left in the competitive first half.

Green up County would get to nice plays before the half ended. The first came with fifty five point three second left on the clock. Jared Hunt would connect with, Kyle Cochran (6-1 185 Junior Wide Receiver) on fourth and ten for a big first down. The other play took place with, forty three point eight seconds left in the half, and that was a big run by Hunt on a scramble play.
The third quarter took forever with neither team scoring even though there were some big hits and some nice plays. Two of the bigger plays went like this. With 11:17 left in the quarter, Green Up got a big run from Ryan Byrd, who went right up the gut of the Lions defense. Then with 1:26 left in the quarter Lewis County would cough the ball up and making the recovery for the home team was, Cam Droneberg a 6-0 175 pound sophomore.

Lewis County had the ball at the green Up County twelve yard line with 11:18 left in the game, when Weddington hooked up with, Jordan Davis for the touchdown. The point after was missed leaving the score, 20-7.

Thurman would show he can play a little defense when he sacked Jared Hunt for a five yard loss, with 9:31 left in the game. This would lead to a Green Up County punt. Something I noticed when Green Up County punts is that their punter is really slow getting the ball off. It did not hurt them in this contest, but I would think there is a team or two they face late will be able to make this a big problem, if it does not get corrected.

With 5:37 left in the last quarter Green Up County would get a sack on Weddington when Drew Johnston (6-1 215 Junior) got to the quarterback.

When the home town team got the ball back it was the Ryan Byrd show. The talented running back would pick up three straight first downs, with nice hard runs where he seemed like a man playing with boys.

After Byrd was help to no gain when he was hit by Jordan Davis, the Green Up County coaching staff elected to give Byrd another carry and he brought the big home crowd to its feet, with an exciting twenty eight yard scoring run. I am not sure why the Musketeers elected to go for two points at this point of the game but they did and Lewis County made them pay as they stopped the try. So with 2:41 left in the game the score remained, 20-13.

Lewis County would respond in just three plays to up its lead to 26-13. The scoring play was a big seventy seven yard pass play from Weddington to Jordan Davis, who was wide opened . The point after was block leaving the score,26-13 Lewis County.

Kenton Boggs would take the ball all the way to the Lewis County one yard line, with a twenty seven yard run. He would have scored if not for Jordan Davis making another big play.

Byrd would take it the final yard for the touchdown and after Chris Haney easily nailed the point after the score was 26-20.

Needing a huge play from its defense to have any shot at posting a come back win the Musketeers got just what they needed , when Thurman put the ball on the ground and Byrd pounced on it, with 1:13 left.

Green Up County had only thrown six passes at this point in the game and had zero completions. Maybe that is why the coaching staff elected to run the ball four straight times. On those four plays the offense managed to gain only four yards.

Lewis County would take a knee on the last snap of the game to preserve their, 26-20 victory.
