52nd District Pairings Set
#1
With district play in the books, we are now able to determine what the match ups will be in a few weeks for the 52nd District Tournament that will be held at Harlan High School. While Middlesboro and HC did split their games and swept their remaining district games, Middlesboro once again gets the advantage through the tie breaker of runs allowed in head to head games. Middlesboro allowed 12 to Harlan County and Harlan County allowed 18 to Middlesboro. That being said, the match ups will be:

(1) Middlesboro vs. (4) Harlan
(2) Harlan County vs. (3) Bell County

My prediction is that it will be another big match up between Middlesboro and Harlan County for the championship. If that happens, will Boggs throw?
#2
I believe you may be mistaken on the tiebreaker. I think this year it has went back to a coin toss........
#3
I was thinking it went back to a coin toss as well.
#4
First of all, it has NEVER been a coin toss. That is basketball. Secondly, there was an error made on the document submitted to the KHSAA but I have been told that it has been cleared up by all the ADs and the tie breakers will be the same as they have always been, with runs allowed head to head being the first tie breaker.
#5
I heard there may have been some kind of mistake made in submitting the change back to a coin toss to the KHSAA.

MHS Parent is showing off that great memory again though. It was a coin toss for a long time in the 52nd District, which is the district we are discussing. I flipped the coin myself once at home plate at Cawood High School after a game.

Let me restate, no district that Middlesboro has been in for the past 30 years has had a coin toss as the top tie-breaker (after head to head). This only includes the 52nd district for the past 5 years.
#7
Here are the other district pairings in the 13th. 49th district North vs. Jackson Co., winner to play Clay (OBI and Red Bird do not compete in the district). 50th South vs. Williamsburg, Whitley vs. Corbin. Not sure about the 51st, although I am assuming it is Knox vs. Lynn Camp and Pineville vs. B'ville. Only real chance of an upset in any of the districts would appear to be Whitley vs. Corbin. The Colonels have beaten them once, but probably can't beat them with Goins on the mound for Corbin.

Live it up for now sir, take what you want out of that first game with HC, but I believe that was a complete fluke! Also, all the errors in the 2nd game by HC was very uncharacteristic of the team this year. Enjoy your 1 seed as long as you can, but we like our chances very much with any 1 of our top 3 or 4 arms on the mound against the Yellow Jackets come tournament time...

Black Bear I'd say MHS is pretty confident as well with either Hale or Crawford. Hale 1 hit HC earlier this year and Crawford, while he didn't have a good showing this year, has beaten HC twice in his career.

HC better worry about Dillon Cox on the mound for us at Bell. If he is on he is as good as anyone.

If HC shows up and plays any where near their capabilities they will move on to the region as a district winner IMO...

Cox was supposed to pitch against the Black Bears last week and didn't I said then they were saving him for the district. If HC can catch the ball they will do just fine.

If this is true those errors are what cost them #1 Seed. M'Boro scored 8 runs 6 or 7 were unearned!
#13
No errors didn't cost them. a 1 hit shutout cost them. they could not hit Hale.
#14
I think he meant the second game. Harlan County had seven errors.
#15
Middlesboro earned the #1 seed. That is not a knock on Harlan County. In game 2, after HC made 3 errors in game 1, Middlesboro was determined to put the ball in play and make Harlan County make the plays. Fortunately for Middlesboro, that strategy allowed them to push across enough runs to lock up the top seed.
#16
I don't see how scoring 6 or 7 unearned runs earned anything. Leisge had a no hitter through 5 innings. But the 1st game shutout is what earned them the #1 Seed.
#17
HC scored 5 unearned runs in the second game themselves.

You said the 1st game shutout, 1 hitter, 6 inning game is what earned them the #1 seed....so....does that mean you agree with my original statement? Middlesboro earned the #1 seed?

You want to keep carrying on about this 1 seed thing even though HC chose to not even use either one of their 2 senior standout pitchers?? One of them which has been one of the top pitchers in the 13th region for 4 years (Tyler Boggs) and the other one that has arguably been HC's most consistent pitcher over the last 2 years (James Bond)?? Like I have said before, live it up and enjoy the 1 seed while you can sir!

Is that not what I said??????

Actually Bond came into the game in the 7th inning and Middlesboro hit him pretty easily, scoring 3 runs.

Not pitching Boggs was really just a bad coaching move in my opinion. You did the same thing last year and it didn't work. Why would it work this year?

Would you rather play Bell County or Harlan. That is what is boils down to. Not that either are much to write home about...but...Bell County, with Cox on the mound, is much better than any combination that Harlan might have.

Easier route to championship and home advantage? Why wouldn't a coach try to get the top seed?

You implied that Middlesboro did nothing in the 2nd game to earn a 1 seed. I just needed you to clarify that you do in fact, think that Middlesboro earned the 1 seed. Thanks.
#22
I said they earned it in the 1st game. You just wanted me to say it again!!! LOL
#23
It turns out they did have to draw after all, but it didn't change anything.
Middlesboro vs Harlan at 5:30
Harlan County vs Bell County at 8:00
#24
HC's AD screws up and HC almost gets an underserved 1 seed.

Oh well. I've been told that this seeding plan was written up correctly this year though and as it should be, someone will have to earn the top seed on the field and not by coin toss.
#25
(1) Middlesboro
(2) Bell County
