6-YEAR-OLD OK AFTER TAKING WRONG BUS

By Raviya H. Ismail

HERALD-LEADER EDUCATION WRITER

A Fayette County school bus driver resigned yesterday morning, a day after she dropped off a 6-year-old kindergarten student at the wrong bus stop, more than a mile away from the child's home.

Reva Oney resigned as the district investigated why procedures were not followed. She had been with the district for about two years and had a clean driving record.

The 6-year-old took the wrong bus after summer camp at Breckinridge Elementary School on Monday, and was let off at a stop on the other side of Richmond Road from where he lives. The student, whom the district did not identify, made it home safely.

The school district's policy states that kindergarten students must be met by a parent or parent designee, but no one was at the stop to meet him. All schools were told that this policy must be followed during the summer as well.

The policy requires each elementary school student to be issued a tag that indicates which bus to ride. The tag should also indicate their bus stop.

A staff member of the school is supposed to check the students' names on a list when they climb aboard, and bus drivers must check tags to make sure children are getting off at the correct stops.

In addition, kindergarten students have blue tags to indicate that they must be met by a parent or the parent's designee at the bus stop. If no one is at the bus stop, the student must be taken back to the school or the transportation depot.

District officials are investigating, and more disciplinary action may follow. The district will send letters home with all children in the district's summer camp programs to inform parents about the incident.

Wow, how can you just drop off a kid without making sure they live there, especially after a camp, the parents most likely would have been there to get their child.

I never did like the idea of kindergarten students riding the bus....Scary some of the things you think that could happen.
