Maynard taking tennis talents to Cumberlands
By ROCKY STANLEY â The Independent
Recent Lawrence County High School graduate Tyler Maynard feels equally at home on the tennis court or the football field.
Thatâs one of the things University of the Cumberlands tennis coach Chin Tan likes about his recruit.
âHaving played football for many years, Tylerâs athletic ability can serve as a strong base for him to develop a winning game in tennis,ââ Tan said.
The 6-foot, 180-pounder already knows about success leveling a racket.
Maynard, who also started at tight end on the football team, leaves Lawrence County as one of the winningest tennis players in school history. He advanced to the State Tournament each of the past two seasons.
âTylerâs been a good leader for us this year,ââ said Lawrence County coach Chad Williams. âIn the regional tournament, he won his semifinal match in doubles to clinch the team title for us.ââ
Along with his strong doubles play, Maynard went unbeaten in singles as a senior.
âThe coach from Cumberland saw him a few times and was impressed,ââ Williams said. âTylerâs looking forward to a real good career down there.ââ
Maynard visited the campus during spring break and took part in what amounted to a tennis tryout. He subsequently signed with the NAIA school.
âEverything went well,ââ Maynard said. âItâs a great campus and I liked all the people there.ââ
Maynard expects to contribute for the Patriots right away.
âI should start on the travel team as one of the top six,ââ he said.
Tan described Maynard as a physically strong player who has an even stronger desire to do well in tennis.
âTylerâs serve is his real strength and his ground strokes are based on his strong legs and great racket speed,ââ Tan said. âHis desire to improve and his willingness to work hard are two other qualities that our team are fortunate to have.ââ
