Gretchen Samsel's three-point shot with 43 seconds remaining put Sacred Heart ahead to stay in the Valkyries' 63-61 win over Archbishop Mitty (Calif.) in the Division L championship game of the Nike Tournament of Champions in Phoenix.

Samsel's shot gave Sacred Heart, ranked 11th in The Courier-Journal's preseason coaches poll, a 62-61 lead over the Monarchs (6-3). Ashley Johnson added a free throw with seven seconds remaining for the final margin.

DaiJia Ruffin carried the scoring load for the Valkyries (10-0), with 27 points on 10 of 16 shots and 7 of 7 free throws. Samsel finished with 10 points.
