I would have liked to seen this one, seem like it was a dandy. Two of the better teams in the state which could meet up again in the Sweet 16.

How did Matlock do, suppose to be one of the best sophomores in the state?

He didn't score a lot but he did have the game winning shot with about 20 seconds left.

Hopkinsville 13 18 14 13 59
Collins 18 13 14 14 58

Hopkinsville (6-1) – Edwards 6, Henry 12, Majors 22, Bell 2, Davis 2, Matlock 8, Cager 7.

Collins (7-2) – Kidwell 5, Stone 11, Whyte 3, Johnson 15, Marshall 17, Smith 7.

3-point goals – Henry 4, Cager; Kidwell, Johnson 4, Marshall 2.

JaQualis Matlock didn't have his best shooting performance, but his final attempt was a game-winner.

Matlock's putback with 25 seconds left gave the Hopkinsville High School boys' basketball team a one-point lead it didn't relinquish in a 59-58 victory over Collins on Wednesday in the first round of the Canfield Development King of the Bluegrass Holiday Classic at Fairdale.

The 6-foot-5 sophomore hit just 4 of 12 shots for eight points but posted a game-high 10 rebounds and was praised for his defense on Collins star Dez Marshall.

"He got a little frustrated in the first half because he missed a lot of easy shots," Tigers coach Tim Haworth said. "I kept telling him, 'I don't care about your missed shots. You just have to keep playing.' I thought he did a great job of that."

Hopkinsville (6-1), No. 8 in The Courier-Journal's preseason poll of coaches, will face the Ballard-Butler winner in Friday's 9 p.m. quarterfinal. Jordan Majors hit 6 of 6 free throws and scored 20 points to lead the defending Second Region champions. Demarius Henry added 12 points on 4-of-5 3-point shooting.

Marshall scored 17 points with 6-of-14 shooting to lead No. 19 Collins (7-2), which will face the Ballard-Butler loser in a consolation game at 9 p.m. Friday. Buddy Johnson hit four 3-pointers and scored 15 points, and Ralphie Stone added 11 points and eight rebounds.

The Titans led 15-4 early, but the Tigers rallied to tie it at 31 at halftime, setting up a back-and-forth second half that included nine lead changes.

Collins took its final lead, 58-57, on Marshall's layup with 50 seconds left. After Hopkinsville's Jamonte Davis missed a shot, Matlock was there for the putback. Johnson missed a stepback 3-point attempt with one second left.

Haworth noted his team pulled out the victory without its starting backcourt for much of the fourth quarter. Senior T.J. Elam was limited to four first-half minutes because of an illness. Junior Tra Edwards suffered a concussion on a fall in the second half.

"For us to be able to come out with the victory with our starting backcourt out of the lineup against this team was remarkable," Haworth said. "We didn't play that well, but we were able to fight through and do what it took to win."
