LOS ANGELES -- Mark McGwire has informed the St. Louis Cardinals that he intends to leave his position as the team's hitting coach to take a similar job with the Los Angeles Dodgers, according to a report in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
McGwire, who broke baseball's single-season home run record in 1998 and later admitted to using steroids, lives in Orange County, about 40 miles south of Dodger Stadium.
McGwire has been the Cardinals' hitting coach the past three seasons.
Two sources told ESPNLosAngeles.com's Ramona Shelburne that while the Dodgers haven't completed an agreement with McGwire yet, it's "heading that way."
The Dodgers fired Dave Hansen as their hitting coach shortly after the season ended, and general manager Ned Colletti said recently he had begun interviewing candidates.
According to the Post-Dispatch report, a deal between McGwire and the Dodgers has not yet been finalized.
McGwire, a 12-time All-Star, worked for both Tony La Russa and Mike Matheny in St. Louis.
The Cardinals have had one of the National League's best offenses under McGwire, and many have credited him for the emergence of young hitters such as Allen Craig, David Freese and Matt Carpenter. The Dodgers have been through four hitting coaches since 2008, a group that includes their current manager, Don Mattingly.
Colletti did not immediately return a call to ESPNLosAngeles.com seeking confirmation of a deal with McGwire.
In McGwire's three seasons in St. Louis, the Cardinals have led the NL in batting average (.269) and on-base percentage (.337) and ranked second in runs (2,263) and fourth in slugging percentage (.416).
The Dodgers finished 13th in both runs and OPS last year.
McGwire, who grew up in the San Gabriel Valley just east of Los Angeles, played collegiate baseball at USC, where he set a school record with 32 home runs in 1984.
