U Pike - directions to Blfd
#1
Simple :
Go out to the 4-lane and head East on 460 for 2 hours.
Turn left at the light just before the Welcome to WV sign.
Turn left at the next light, then bear right at the itty-bitty traffic island.
Mitchell Stadium is 1/2 mile up on the left.

Detailed :
Head South on 23 to Shelbiana. Bear right onto 460/80 by Food City.
Go something like 20 minutes... you'll pass by East Ridge HS.
When you hit the foot of that mtn., keep your speed up for the next mtn., but watch for left-turning vehicles just past the old store.
At the foot of the 2nd mtn., you'll bear right onto 460, but have to YIELD off the ramp, AND watch for traffic from the store across the road.

You'll have 2 lanes for about 20 minutes, to the edge of Grundy.
Before (or jusr after) the 2nd light, you'll need to be in the left lane, because the right lane turns right at the 3rd light to the infamous 3-story Wal-Mart (don't waste your time here... it's 1-story, built on top of a parking garage, just like the theater across the road, but on a bigger scale).
Also, the speed drops to 25 and you'll have about 5 minutes of construction zone. Just past Rite-Aid, you'll make a right-ish onto the new pavement. Around the turn from New Peoples, the barrels end, and you're back on the 4-lane.
However, the right lane used to be right-turn-only until a couple of weeks ago, so watch out for ppl. suddenly changing lanes for the next 1/2 mile, where you'll find a traffic light in the middle of that big curve. There's a lot of popular businesses on the right over the next couple of miles, and another light just over the crest past McD's (this will be the half-way point).

Spend about 15 minutes rollercoastering. You'll see a turnoff for Honaker, then a sign on up the hill that says 55 MPH... don't fall for it... the speed drops to 35 before you get to the bottom of the hill. Just past the light, you''ll hit a "detour" into the left-side lanes for a bridge replacement at the next light.

Go about 5 minutes. You'll hit a 45 mph zone through "the cuts" and up a hill. At the top, turn left at the light onto 19/460 (both lanes go left, but the right lane also splits off to the right AND goes straight).

Go about 30 minutes. At the 2nd light (just before the Welcome to WV sign), turn left, then turn left at the next light. Go about 50 yards and bear right at the itty-bitty traffic island. Mitchell Stadium is 1/2 mile up on the left.

(If you're hungry, you can take the Pocahontas exit or the 1st light for eats.)

fun facts ...

After you leave the 4-lane, you'll cross the state line 3 times.
The stadium is in WV, but the baseball field next door is in Va.

The big inter-city rivalry game between Bluefield (WV) & Graham (VA) is tonight.

Remember the Giants RB who accidentally scored a TD in the Super Bowl, when he couldn't stop himself at the 1? That was Grahamn's Ahmad Bradshaw, and Mitchell Stadium was his home field in high school. (You'll be hard pressed to find another HS whose home field is in a neighboring state.)
