6th Region Tournament
#32
Pleasure Ridge Park got another stellar pitching performance and took advantage of some Bullitt East miscues and shut out the Chargers 3-0 Friday night to win the Sixth Region baseball tournament at the University of Louisville’s Jim Patterson Stadium.

The Panthers (29-11) didn’t allow a single run in their three regional games. They’ll open State Tournament play against Newport Central Catholic (24-16-1) at 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Whitaker Bank Ballpark in Lexington.

“I’ll put our three (starting) pitchers against anybody in the state,” coach Bill Miller said. “That’s where it starts.”

The latest sterling effort came from Andrew Bramley (6-3), who tossed a two-hitter and struck out 11 against Bullitt East (34-7). He allowed just one baserunner and no hits over the final four innings after dodging a few bullets early in the game.

The Chargers blew scoring chances in the second and third innings.

After Trevor Gonzalez delivered a shot to center that bounced over the fence for a ground-rule double, Adam Howell reached on a perfect bunt down the third-base line. Bramley rebounded to strike out Josh Stearns and Brett Hatfield and get Coulten Maupin to fly out to center field.

The first two Chargers reached again in the third, this time on walks to Tyler Minogue and Austin Money. A double play and groundout quickly ended that threat.

“Those were just small bullets,” Miller said. “We had the bigger bullet on the mound. He settled down. He’s a strikeout guy, and he can get out of jams.”

“He did a great job of working out of some jams,” Bullitt East coach James Bowles said. “It was a well-pitched game by both sides.”

East came apart at the seams in the bottom of the third, when PRP scored all of its runs without the ball leaving the infield.

Josh Beams led off with a walk. Cody Strong dropped a bunt in front of the plate, and catcher Hunter Wood threw the ball past first base as Beams went to third and Strong to second. Beams scored when Alex Miller reached on a throwing error by second baseman Austin Money, and Strong came home on Joe Hatcher’s safety squeeze.

With two out, Jacob Clair hit a grounder to third baseman Brett Hatfield, whose throw was wide of first base. Clair then broke for second, and Miller scored on a delayed double steal.

“We didn’t make some routine plays, some easy plays,” Bowles said. “This is not indicative on how our season went. Our defense is one of the things we’ve improved on through the season.

“It’s good that our program, I guess, is disappointed with 34-7, and we are. Right now it’s a tough pill to swallow.”
