The Reds got a solid start from Bronson Arroyo when they badly needed it.

He went eight innings and allowed three runs on five hits to earn his first victory of the season. He walked none and struck out five. He threw 90 pitches, 66 strikes.

Sean Marshall pitched ninth for his second save as a Red.

The Reds won the finale to avoid a sweep for the second straight series. They are 2-5 on the road trip so far. They open a three-game series tomorrow in Chicago.

The Reds, who came in with a total of six home runs, hit three on the day. Brandon Phillips, Ryan Ludwick and Drew Stubbs all homered.

The Reds took a 3-0 lead in the fourth inning via the long ball.

Phillips started things with a 432-foot blast to left for his first of the year. Jay Bruce followed with a single to center. Ludwick launched one into the Reds’ bullpen in left for his second of the year.

Just like that, it was 3-0.

The Reds added a run in the fifth. Arroyo led off with a single. He was out on Zack Cozart’s fielder’s choice. After Stubbs flied out, Joey Votto walked. Phillips sliced a single into right to get Cozart home and make it 4-0.

Arroyo cruised through the first five, allowing only two hits. That pushed Arroyo’s string of scoreless innings to 12 1/3.

St. Louis starter Adam Wainwright was done after five. He gave up the four runs on seven hits. He walked one and struck out five.

Arroyo retired 12 of 13 going into the sixth. Rafael Furcal and Jon Jay led off with back-to-back singles. Matt Holliday hit the next pitch into seats left to make it 4-3.

Stubbs got the lead back to two with a home run to straightaway center. It was his first of the year.

The Reds added a run in the ninth. Ryan Hanigan and Stubbs singled. Votto got Hanigan with a two-out single. http://cincinnati.com/blogs/reds/2012/04...0-after-5/
