The University of Louisville running backs have coach Charlie Strong feeling so confident in the ground game that heâs reluctantly making statements he wouldnât normally make.
Dominique Brown, Senorise Perry, Jeremy Wright and Corvin Lamb will attempt to show why Strong is so excited when the Cardinals play their annual Red-White game at 1 p.m. today in Papa Johnâs Cardinal Stadium.
âI hate to say it, because every time I say a position can be our best position it kind of falls back and slaps you in the face,â Strong said. âBut ⦠you have four running backs that you can put the ball in their hands and they can make it happen.â
The spring game will pit the first team against the second team. It will begin with the second team spotted a 21-0 lead to see if the starters can rally to win. The running backs could be interchangeable on the two units.
The best thing about the backfield depth could be the playersâ versatility. The 6-foot-2, 227-pound Brown, who said heâs added about 15 pounds of muscle since his sophomore season last fall, is the power runner of the bunch. Perry (6-0, 192) is a slasher who will outrun defenders if he gets a step. Wright (5-11, 205) has shifty quickness between tackles. Lamb (5-9, 216) has a combination of power and quickness.
âI donât know if we can take one and say, âHey, this is the guy,â but you have four sitting there where you can go play the game,â Strong said. âYou feel comfortable with any of the four in the game.â
Strong admittedly would like to feature one back, as he did in 2010 when Bilal Powell produced the second-best rushing year in school history with 1,405 yards, but no clear-cut favorite has emerged this spring.
In some years that lack of separation would mean a bunch of mediocre backs sharing carries. Itâs quite the contrary with this group. Running backs coach Kenny Carter said the staff entered the spring figuring one individual would outshine the rest. Instead, they all seemed to elevate each other to the point that they all have earned carries.http://www.courier-journal.com/article/2...t|Sports|p
