Chipper Jones to retire at the end of 2012 Season
#1
Chipper Jones will retire at the end of the 2012 Season
#2
This will be a sad day for me, Chipper is one of my favorite all time players
#3
SK, in this day and age of players more often than not "Do the wrong thing", Chipper has been personification of Class! His kind is hard to come by. I, as a Red's fan, never liked the Braves. But it's hard to dislike Jones.

^ Agreed. I'm an A-Rod fan but I'd put Chipper over him Easy. Chipper is easily one of my top 3 favorite players

Do you think he will get some kind of hitting coaching job in the organization?

I hope so. I believe he would make a fine hitting instructor

a la Dale Murphy!!!

Dusty, why have you never liked the Braves? Because of our winning ways? LOL. As a lifelong Braves fan, I hate to see Chipper retire, but he is smart enough to know when to get out. Too many players hang on too long. Over the years, he has taken less money to stay with the Braves. I could be wrong, but I don't think I have ever seen him show up an umpire or lose his cool. Chipper is a surefire first time ballot HOF inductee. Class personified!!! :notworthy

^ Shady, I really miss the days of the Reds, Braves and Dodgers being in the same division. As an old school guy, I can certainly remember well the battles these teams had that just don't have the same flavor now. I echo all that you said about Chipper, we just don't see many professional athletes like him anymore. This generations Dale Murphy for the Braves organization.

Chipper has to have knee surgery to repair a torn meniscus.

Shame, he should at least have the opportunity to go out on his own terms

^He'll be fine. They are saying he may even be back by opening day.

Jones should have retired two years ago. He is a drag on the Braves because of his limited playing time, lack of range in the field, and shrinking bat. He has never been a leader in the clubhouse. On the field, he was fine in his day, even a md-level future H of Fer, but his day has long passed.

OUCH!!!!! He is one of the last true loyal players of the game!

While I personally don't like he guy, he does play the game with class and deserves to retire on his terms.

Apparently that is what he will be allowed to do but he is still more of a negative than a positive. The Braves can't find a stable lineup because they never know when Jones will be available to play and when he will be mending his numerous aches and pains.

This is detrimental to the stability snd development of Martin Prado who is, at this stage, clearly a superior player to the over-the-hill Jones.

Also, With Uggla at second and Jones at third, whoever plays shortstop better have the range of Ozzie Smith to cover for these below average fielders.
