MADISONVILLE, Ky. — Armed with the experience of a challenging regular season, Henderson County charged into the semifinals of the Second Region Tournament with a 69-42 win over Livingston Central in Thursday's opening round.

The Colonels (18-14) used numerous transition baskets to start the game with a 15-6 lead and were never threatened by the Fifth District champion Cardinals (21-11).

"I think the schedule that we played has us ready for this," Henderson County coach Mark Starns said. "You've got to play the upper echelon of competition if you want to get past the first and second rounds in this region and hopefully get to Rupp Arena."

Standing between Henderson County and its eighth trip to the regional final in the last 11 years is 30-2 Hopkinsville, which moved into Monday's semifinals with a 79-48 win over Caldwell County.

The Colonels took advantage of every fast-break opportunity and used five Cardinal turnovers in the first quarter to generate the early lead.

"We brought a lot of intensity," senior Jermain Langley said of the team's start. Langley, who finished with 16 points, spearheaded the transition game from his point guard spot. "We knew we had a lot more speed than they did," he said.

Despite giving up size to Livingston's 6-4 tandem of Lucas Croft and Kenny Cowsert, the Colonels held a decisive 35-18 advantage on the boards. Cain Cooper led the effort with eight rebounds.

On the defensive end, Henderson County held the Cardinals to 33 percent shooting from the field (16-of-49).

"We were concerned with Croft and Cowsert since they were both averaging 18 points a game. We focused our defense on them," Starns said. "Our defense did the job tonight."

With a balanced offensive effort led by Kaleb Duckworth's 19 points, the Colonels hit 29 of their 43 attempts from the field (67 percent). David Simmons rounded out the double-figure scorers with 13 points.

After leading 22-11 at the end of the first quarter, Henderson County used a 12-0 run in the second period to extend its lead. Cowsert scored all five of the Cardinals' points in the quarter as the Colonels led 38-16 at the half.

Croft scored 10 of his team-high 15 points for Livingston Central in a six-minute stretch late in the third quarter and early in the fourth.

Hopkinsville won the regular-season meeting at Henderson County 63-49 on Dec. 13.

"The next three days are extremely important for us. We have to be really prepared," Starns said.
