Boone County is in a familiar place of late in the Ninth Region tournament thanks to its offensive patience, while it’s been a long time since its next opponent has advanced as far as it has.

Boone County got 13 points, seven rebounds and three assists from junior forward Zane McQueary, and made 18 of 19 free throws, including all 14 it took in the fourth quarter, to hold off Holmes, 51-43, in a quarterfinal game of the Ninth Region tournament on Thursday night at Bank of Kentucky Center.

The Rebels (25-7), who advanced to at least the semifinal round for the fourth straight season, will face the surprise team of the postseason, Lloyd, at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday.

The Juggernauts defeated Highlands 42-39 in Thursday’s other quarterfinal.

Boone County, which beat Holmes 61-51 on Feb. 7, started sluggishly in its win as it had a hard time executing against the Bulldogs’ 2-3 zone defense. Part of the reason was the defense kept the ball from getting into the hands of Boone County’s leading scorer Zane McQueary, who is averaging 18.9 points per game and had 21 points in the earlier meeting.

The Rebels trailed 12-8 after one quarter and the 6-foot-5 McQueary didn’t score for the almost the 14 minutes of the game. His first basket came as he was being fouled and he made the subsequent free throw to put Boone County on top for good at 18-17. He followed it up with an assist and then another basket to give the Rebels a 22-15 lead.

“The first time we played them they didn’t zone us, but we knew they would this time,” said Boone County coach Greg McQueary, Zane’s father. “I felt if we could the ball to Zane they would converge on him and it would open some guys up. The first six minutes he didn’t get very many touches and after we were able to get him the ball, he drew the defense and he’s a pretty good passer and we were able to score. Once we made the adjustment we did a better job. I think we relaxed finally once we got a couple of buckets.”

Boone County, which beat Holmes in the first round last season after losing to the Bulldogs in the 2010 semifinals and 2009 championship game, extended the lead to 33-24 through three quarters and then 35-24 early in the fourth quarter.

Holmes closed within 47-43 on B.J. Coston’s three-pointer with 39 seconds left, but got no closer.

“We had a pretty good idea they were going to try to take me away,” said Zane McQueary. “I had to tell myself this is the scouting report, and this is what we’ve been practicing three days on and eventually it will happen. As long as somebody’s scoring and making the play, that’s the key right there.”

If you told me the 35th district and Dixie wouldn't have a team in the regional finals before the season, I wouldn't have put money on it. Holy Cross, Holmes and CovCath were 3 of the top 5 teams in the region, Dixie was number 1. None of these teams are left.

I did always feel Boone was under rated most of the season though.
