South Warren 42 - Butler County 29
#1
The South Warren girls' basketball team is finding its groove at the right time.
The Lady Spartans (6-22) overcame a sluggish first quarter Thursday against Butler County, finishing the regular season with a 42-29 victory at SWHS.
After starting the season 2-18, South Warren has won four of its last five.
"The good thing is, they like the winning, and they don't have any cocky attitude," South Warren coach Ken Waddell said. "It wasn't by design to come out so slow tonight, but we picked it up. I was scared we might be flat, and we came out that way, but ended up putting together one of our more complete games."
The Lady Spartans didn't record a field goal in the first quarter, falling behind 6-0 while Butler County (4-23) kept SWHS off-balance with a 2-3 zone defense.
"I think we were kind of hesitant with the zone because they were pulling it up so high, but we did better once we started talking and seeing the gaps better," SWHS junior guard Chelsea Forrester said.
South Warren's lone point of the first quarter came on a free throw by freshman forward Colby Downing at the 1:32 mark, but the Lady Spartans opened the second with 10 straight points.
Sophomore guard Kaley Burnette knocked down two jumpers, Downing followed with a 3-pointer and sophomore guard Rachel Garden netted two floaters in the lane.
"We did change some stuff on offense, getting some cutters in there," Waddell said. "Once we got some of those 10- and 12-footers to fall, it was easier for ours 3s to fall."
Butler County answered with five straight points, but South Warren took a 15-11 lead into halftime. The Lady Spartans made 6 of 8 shots from the field in the second quarter after missing all six attempts in the first.
The Lady Bears were still down five with 4:11 to play, but South Warren used an 8-0 run to put the game out of reach. Butler County shot 18 percent from the field in the game and turned the ball over nine times in the second half.
"We did a good job defensively, especially the first half," Butler County coach Christy Clark said. "We had a few lapses where we gave up some easy points, but the game comes down to our offense. When you can't put the ball in the hole, there's not much you can do about that. That'll get better hopefully."
Forrester led all scorers with 12 points, while Burnette and Downing each scored nine. The Lady Spartans shot 42 percent from the field.
"It's great to have such a young team and fight through everything," Forrester said. "It's a real confidence boost to finish the regular season this way."
Junior guard Madeline Drake and sophomore forward Katie Graham scored seven points apiece for Butler County. The Lady Bears, seeded third in District 12, meet No. 2 seed Edmonson County at 7:45 p.m. Monday in a tournament semifinal at Grayson County.
South Warren plays Warren East at 6 p.m. Monday in the opener of the District 14 Tournament at Warren Central.
"We want to give them a punch right out of the gate," Forrester said. "We don't want to fall behind like we did tonight. We want to show them what we're made of right away."
