Somerset — Somerset always likes to make things interesting.
The Lady Briar Jumpers, who have made some impressive comebacks in week’s past, made another valiant comeback last night against the Pulaski County Lady Maroons.
Chris Adkins and crew overcame a sluggish opening half, a half that saw them trail by as much as 13 points, to down the homestanding Lady Maroons by a final tally of 59-55 last night at PC Gym.
Despite losing senior Mariko Krause in the early minutes of the second half, the Lady Jumpers were able to pick-up the four-point victory over their cross-town and 47th District rival.
“We never felt like we were out of it, but things got tough when Mariko Krause went down,” began Adkins, who saw his club move to 11-12 with the victory over Pulaski. “Our team spirit was down when Mariko went down to start the second half. I knew Maranda Mills would come in and give a good effort - and she did.”
Somerset used a 10-0 run late in the third quarter and early in the fourth quarter to get within one point at 45-44 with 6:50 left in the ballgame.
Pulaski junior Brittany Warren, who finished with a game-high 26 points, nailed a three-pointer to give the Lady Maroons a 48-44 advantage. Somerset senior Alyssa Anciro would cut the lead to two points with a lay-up with just over six minutes left to play in the contest.
Mills, who came up with big shots against in their first meeting with the Lady Maroons, got a steal and a lay-up to knot the game up at 48-48 with 5:37 to go. Pulaski would respond with a jump shot from junior Sarah Correll, who gave the Lady Maroons a 50-48 advantage.
After a Correll basket, sophomore Madison Brooks tied the game up at 50 apiece with a lay-up. The Lady Maroons would respond with another big shot from B. Warren, who knocked down a trey, giving Pulaski a 53-50 lead with 4:08 remaining in regulation.
Brooks and the Lady Jumpers got on a roll late in the frame, as the sophomore came up with a free-throw and back-to-back lay-ups that allowed the ‘Purple and Gold’ to grab a 55-53 lead.
After Brooks’ second lay-up with 2:46 left in the game, Somerset was able to take their first lead of the night. The Lady Jumpers would never relinquish it back to Pulaski.
Both teams would trade a free-throw to make the score, 56-54, in favor of Somerset with 1:33 left in the cross-town clash.
With 51 seconds left, Lady Maroon senior Mariah Meeks would hit a free-throw to get Pulaski within one point at 56-55.
Mills would go one-of-two from the charity stripe with 32 seconds left to give the Lady Jumpers a 57-55 lead.
Anciro would make things a lot of tougher for the Lady Maroons to comeback, as she knocked down both free-throws to make the score, 59-55, which would be the final tally.
It was the tale of two halves for the Lady Maroons, according to head coach Brian Miller.
“We played well early on,” said Miller. “The second half, when Somerset made a run, it was kind of like we hit the panic button. I give them a lot of credit, especially the (Madison) Brooks kid. I thought she played well, and she was huge for them in the fourth quarter. They executed well at the end of the game.”
The first half was all Pulaski, as they opened the game up with an 8-0 run. At the conclusion of the first period, the Lady Maroons had a 21-11 lead over visiting Somerset.
Both teams scored 15 points each in the second frame to make the score, 36-26, at the intermission.
For the victorious Lady Jumpers, junior Bethany Edwards led the charge with a club-high 15 points. Edwards was Somerset’s only bright spot in the opening half, tallying 12 points in the first two quarters of action.
Three more Lady Jumpers joined Edwards in double figures - Brooks, Anciro, and Mills. Brooks chimed in with 14 points, Anciro scored 11 points, and Mills tallied 10 points.
Anciro pulled down 11 rebounds, while Brooks had nine boards.
“A couple of our seniors, Alyssa Anciro and Cassie Bray, they just have the will to win,” told the Lady Jumpers hoops coach. “I thought Madison Brooks played a tremendous second half. She struggled early on, but she is only a sophomore. I’m really proud of her effort tonight.”
B. Warren had a huge game for the Lady Maroons, leading all scorers with 26 points, which included six treys.
Meeks scored 11 points for the Lady Maroons, while junior Haley Warren hit double figures with ten points.
Junior Sarah Howard tied for a game-high 11 rebounds.
“We’ve got to get healthy and get ready for the district tournament,” stated the Lady Maroons hoops coach. “That’s really what means the most right now. I was pleased early on, but we will go back to the drawing board and see what we can do better.”
Pulaski, who fell to 16-10 with the setback, will return to action on Saturday evening, hosting Clinton County at 7:30 p.m. in the Cancer Awareness Classic at PC Gym.
The Lady Jumpers will play their second game in as many days tonight, as they will host the Lady Raiders of McCreary Central at 7:30 p.m. at the Briar Patch.
