The Harlan Lady Dragons used a stellar defensive performance Thursday to pull away for a 50-35 victory over 14th Region foe Breathitt County.
The Harlan defense forced 19 turnover and limited the visiting Lady Cats to 25 percent shooting in the win.
“We did a little better job defensively. I thought early on we did a better job of helping that we did in the second half,” said Harlan coach Derrick Akal.
Harlan got off to a much better start against the Lady Cats this time than in their December meeting, when they trailed by nine at the half. Sophomore Jourdan Ledford opened the scoring with a trey and Gabrielle Rehnborg followed with a pair of free throws to give the Lady Dragons a quick 5-0 lead. After another basket from Rehnborg, senior Ashley Mullins followed with six of Harlan's final seven points of the period to give them Lady Dragons a 14-7 lead.
Both teams struggled to find consistency on the offensive end in the second quarter combining for just 13 points in the period. The Lady Dragons had a six point lead late in the period before junior Gabrielle Rehnborg closed with a basket to make it 21-13 at the half. Rehnborg finished with a game-high 14 points and added six rebounds.
The Lady Dragons led by as much as 14 in the third quarter, but Breathitt closed with two straight baskets to cut the deficit to 10.
Harlan’s Jordan Brock had a pair of 3-pointers to lead the Lady Dragons in the period. The seventh-grade guard had three treys and nine points in the win.
“She made a couple of threes. We took some early and missed, but she got in and made some,” Akal said. “She is a spark. She comes in and hustles, and I think the speed of the game picked up when she got in there.”
Rehnborg had six points early in the fourth quarter as Harlan jumped out to a 14-point lead and put the game away.
Harlan (19-9) returns to action Saturday as it hosts Leslie County, while Breathitt County (17-9) will entertain Knott Centr
