WESTWOOD — Basketball is a game of runs, and players get on rolls, but rarely does a scorer’s streak endure for 32 minutes.
On Monday night, Fairview senior Kayla Day hit her stride with a few early 3-pointers, and the points kept piling on — remarkably, she scored her team’s first 40 points.
When all was said and done, Day collected a cool 49 against Prestonsburg as her team won, 67-55.
“It’s been a long time since I’ve seen anything like that, and that was in a boys game,” said Fairview coach George Bellamy. “I’ve never had a kid with that total.”
Day was 15 of 25 from the field and 14 of 22 from the foul line. She pulled down 10 rebounds and added five steals for good measure.
After the game, Day couldn’t believe the staggering numbers.
“I was like, ‘Did I really do that?’” said Day, who’s amassed 2,100-plus career points at Rose Hill and Fairview. She’s been a Lady Eagle for three seasons.
Monday’s memorable performance is unofficially a single-game school record.
At halftime, Day’s Lady Eagles took a 29-26 lead into the locker room. She had all 29, but she said her focus was more on the fact that her team was winning.
“I didn’t really think about (the points),” Day said. “I wasn’t sure if anyone else had scored, but that’s not what I cared about. I was just glad we were ahead.”
Heading into the game, Day was third in the state in scoring, trailing second-place holder Sydney Moss by a tenth of a point.
According to Day, she has put in extensive work beyond the arc this season, and it’s paying dividends. On Monday, Day was 5-for-9 from three-point range, with all of the long balls coming in the first half.
“The difference was the threes,” Bellamy said. “That’s more than she made all of last year.
“The rest of the points came from her typical game, driving and making free throws,” added the coach.
Prestonsburg (8-16) guarded Day with two or three players for much of the second half.
“I don’t know if she’s had an open look all season,” Bellamy said.
Day admitted she did have some extra motivation. She had read in The Independent earlier in the day that no player in the 16th Region had tallied 40 points in a game this season.
“After reading that, that was one of my goals,” she said with a laugh.
During warmups, she felt like it could be her night to accomplish the feat.
“I was just in the zone on my threes,” Day said. “I knew it was going to be a big night for me. After they beat us last week, I wanted to beat them.”
Day scored 35 points in a loss to Prestonsburg last week.
The Lady Eagles are now 8-16 on the season.
