This figured to be a stiff test for the Lady Cougars as Hopkinsville came in with a 17-3 record, including impressive wins over Murray and Bowling Green.

But the Lady Cougars led from start to finish and after taking an 14-point lead at the start of the second period, their lead was never less than 12 points the rest of the way.

The Lady Cougars got off to a hot start, scoring the first eight points of the game. The run was capped by a Gorby three-pointer. Grayson County hit five three-pointers in the first quarter and led by 11 points, 20-9 at the start of the second period.

Halee Johnston started the second period by hitting another three to push the lead to 14 points, 23-9. Two Gorby free throws and a rebound basket by Katie Newton made it an 18-point Lady Cougar lead, 27-9, with 6:52 left in the half.

The Lady Tigers began to get their wits about them about then and closed out the half with a 15-11 run that saw the lead cut to 14 points, 38-24 at the half.

Grayson County led by 17 points three times in the third quarter, the last time coming at 47-30 with 3:28 left, but the Lady Tigers closed out the period with an 8-3 run to pull back to within 12 points, 50-38 heading into the fourth quarter.

The Lady Cougars led by 15 points twice in the fourth quarter before Hopkinsville scored the last three points for the final margin.

The Lady Tigers put two players into double figures, led by Ashlee Cole's 16 points. Christy Soldo, a Murray State signee, had 14 points, six of them in the fourth quarter.

Sophomore Kaylan Shull had one of her best nights of the year for the Lady Cougars, hitting four three-pointers and finishing with a game-high 18 points. She also had three rebounds and two steals in the game. Gorby hit a pair of threes and finished with 15 points, and led the team with six assists and three steals.

Kelsea Wilson had a rough night offensively, missing several shots right under the bucket and finishing with nine points, but she was a force on the backboards, finishing with 15 rebounds.

Johnston also had two three-pointers on the night and finished with eight points. Maddie Stewart had seven points and Newton ended her night with two to complete the scoring.

JV GAME

After a back-and-forth first quarter, which ended in a 10-10, the Lady Cougars took complete control of the game with a 21-point second period.

Still tied at 12-12 with 4:58 left, the Lady Cougars put together a 12-1 run, capped off by a Katie Hayes three-pointer, to lead by 11 points. 24-13 with 1:40 left. They closed out the half by outscoring the visitors 7-3, including another Hayes' three, to lead by 15 points, 31-16 at the half.

Six straight points, including a three by Breanna Fulkerson, increased the lead to 19 points, 37-18 at the 4:11 mark of the third quarter and forced the Lady Tigers to call a timeout. Hopkinsville was able to whittle away at the lead and trailed by just 13 points, 39-26 heading into the fourth quarter. Hopkinsville was never closer than 14 points the rest of the way.

The Lady Cougars made it more difficult than it should have been against the Lady Tigers, missing 15 shots from the foul line on 13 of 28 free throws.

Three Lady Cougars reached double figures, led by eighth-grader Jodi Decker, with 12 points. Fulkerson had 11 points, five rebounds and three steals, while Hayes finished with 10 points.

Seventh-grader Grace White scored nine points, and added two rebounds, two assists and a team-high five steals. Eighth-grader Sarah Pierce finished with five points.

Three players, Abi Powell, Raven Shelton and Allie Horton all had two points, while Sloane Embry had one to close out the scoring. Jessica Johnson did not score in the game, but led the Lady Cougars on the boards with six rebounds.
