Webster Co. 62 - Union Co. 45
#5
MORGANFIELD — Behind Jacob Scott’s 30 points, Webster County continued its momentum into next week’s showdown with Henderson County for a berth in the Second Region Tournament with a 62-45 win over Union County.

Winners of eight of their past 10 games, the 15-8 Trojans improved to 2-1 in district play with their second victory of the season over the Braves. Webster County hosts Henderson County, which is also 2-1 in the district, with the winner taking the top seed in the tournament and with it, a free pass into the regional tournament.

“We know what’s at stake next Friday, but we don’t want to look past our next practice on Monday and our next game on Tuesday (against Madisonville),” Webster County coach Jon Newton said.

The Trojans placed the proper importance on the game at Union County. “We treated it like a district tournament game. We wanted to make it the most important game we have played so far and make it the biggest statement game of the year,” Newton said.

Union County (8-15) greeted Webster County and Scott with a box-and-one defense for most of the first half. The Trojans used a 17-2 run to take control of the game as Clay Putman scored eight of his 10 first-half points in the run.

“We had a hunch that we’d see a box-and-one to start the game, and we had practiced against that quite a bit,” Newton said. “Clay did a terrific job of penetrating the gaps, and our post players did a good job of stepping to the seams.”

Scott, who didn’t try to force shots against the defense, still managed seven points in the first half. Meanwhile, the Braves were held scoreless for the first 3:30 of the second quarter as the Trojans expanded their lead to lead 32-18 at the half.

Union County abandoned the box-and-one in the second half and Scott took control on the offensive end. The senior guard scored 16 straight points for the Trojans that included not only a pair of 3-pointers but also several driving baskets.

“Jacob has expanded his game so much. He’s not just a shooter. He does a good job of getting to the rim and getting to the free-throw line,” Newton said.

Scott dropped in three of his four 3-pointers in the second half and the state’s free-throw percentage leader hit all eight of his attempts from the line.

Kren Rister, who was honored before the game for scoring his 1,000th career point, led Union County with 19 points.
