Tuesday’s girls’ basketball game pitting Simon Kenton against visiting Boone County was all set to feature a coaching battle between the Rebels’ Nell Fookes and the Pioneers’ Jeff Stowers, who have combined to win more than 900 games in their careers.

Stowers, sitting on 299 victories for two weeks, was hoping to end a four-game losing streak with an upset win over the Rebels, who are ranked No. 1 in the Enquirer Northern Kentucky coaches’ poll. The Pioneers, ranked No. 10, were going up against a Boone County team missing its legendary coach.

Fookes and her assistant, husband Dean Fookes, were away from the team following the passing last week of Fookes’ mother. That meant a quieter bench for Boone, but the result was the same. The Rebels rolled past the Pioneers, 68-47.

“I found out Friday I would be coaching,” said fourth-year assistant Katie Madden, a three-year Rebels starter who graduated in 2004. “But based on last year, I knew what to do, and this team is set up to do well because Nell prepares them.”

Madden coached the team twice last year as Fookes served a two-game KHSAA suspension after drawing technical fouls. Madden improved her career record to 3-0 as the Rebels moved to 20-1 with their 18th win in a row behind the scoring of post-players Sydney Moss and Lydia Nash.

Moss had a game-high 26 points, six assists and five steals. Nash scored 17 and grabbed a team-best 10 rebounds. The duo was particularly effective in the first half. Nash scored eight first-quarter points as the Rebels grabbed a 13-4 lead. Moss scored 10 in the second, six while Boone closed the half on a 9-0 run.

“Coach Madden told us to make a quick start and get our stuff up early,” Moss said. “We definitely wanted to win for Nell because she always picks us up when we’re down.”

Boone’s defense set up its offense. The Rebels forced nine first-half turnovers and outscored the Pioneers 17-2 on points off turnovers before the break.

“That’s the game right there,” Stowers said. “They were leading by 17 at halftime.”

Abby Owings led the Pioneers with 13 points but they came on 3-for-14 shooting. Paige Bosse added nine points and seven rebounds and Hannah Stephenson scored seven and had a team-high five assists.

“We were only down by four with our 3-2 zone, but they made us switch to a man-to-man in the second half because they started beating it,” Stephenson said.

Stowers will be looking for win 300 Saturday at home against seventh-ranked Conner. “If it comes, it comes,” the coach said. “My whole thing right now is getting us better for later.”
