Pleasure Ridge Park 95 - Southern 64
#1
Final
#2
Max Clemons scored 26 points in Pleasure Ridge Park’s 95-64 romp over visiting Southern Friday night, but the big news on the Panthers’ front was that guard Jeril Taylor is back.

Taylor, a 6-foot-4 senior who had missed PRP’s last eight games because of a neck injury, returned and looked like he had never missed a beat in scoring 17 points and grabbing eight rebounds as the Panthers — No. 4 statewide in The Courier-Journal’s Litkenhous Ratings — won their fifth straight game and 14th in 17 starts.

“It’s great to have all the guys back together again,” PRP coach Dale Mabrey said. “Taywan Taylor (no relation to Jeril) stepped in for Jeril and solidified us during Jeril’s absence. We got the good news this week and we had a great practice yesterday. Jeril’s just an athlete. He’s our leader.”

Jeril was injured in a Dec. 17 game of the King of the Bluegrass Holiday Classic at Fairdale.

Mabrey said at first the doctors said Jeril might be sidelined five to seven weeks, but three MRIs revealed no fracture, just a stinger in the neck. After three weeks, Mabrey said the swelling had gone down and he was told he could play again.

“It feels great to be back, but the team played well while I was gone,” said Jeril, who started the game and hit two 3-pointers and 5 of 8 free throws. Jeril scored 15 points in the first half and Clemons, a 6-4 senior guard who has signed with Bellarmine University, rang up 20 of his 26 in the first two quarters.

“I’m happy to have Jeril back on the court with me,’’ Clemons said. “He makes me a better player. He makes everybody better. He’s a great rebounder and we had been struggling there.”

Pressing full court, PRP jumped on Southern quickly, leading 23-4 after a 15-0 spurt, but Southern (12-4) rallied to within 37-27 after two straight driving shots by Alan Alamanza.

“We stopped running, got very hesitant and threw silly passes,” Mabrey said. “I believe Southern was so hyped it worked against them, but our press had a little to do with that, too. This team (PRP) makes runs, and when it does, it’s fun to watch.”
