Kimper was never a high school that I recall, it was just Mullins and Johns Creek that merged to make Pike Central, I believe? Oh, and back in the day, Hellier was a high school, they merged it with Millard sometime in the late 60's (I think) and left Hellier up as an elementary school/junior high for years, at least up through my junior high years as I recall.

Same with Sycamore and Elkhorn City.

The hellier Hellcats might be the greatest School name-mascot combination in the history of the universe.

Wow...didn't realize there used to be this many schools. Alot of great rivalries gone because of consolidation...but alot were born because of it too.

Actually Allen Central was made u from 4 High Schools, they were:
Garrett
Maytown
Wayland
Martin

Johnson Central: Oil Springs, Meade Memorial, Van Lear, Flat Gap in 1968-69.

Lot of big time basketball players went through those four schools.

There were a lot of other schools that were consolidated into some of the schools that were later consolidated again. Years ago there was a school called Kingdom Come, I think it might have been in Letcher County. I know a guy who played there in a game about 1955, and he said they had a chimney at each end of the playing floor and if you were going in to make a layup you had better put the brakes on in a hurry. He said they had a huge coal stove, that kept the gym heated. They also had an all star player named Bobby Shepherd who they nicknamed the Little Shepherd of Kingdom Come. I think he later transferred to Carr Creek and helped them win a state title in 1956.

Also Leatherwood High, not sure of the county but guessing either Perry or Leslie. In Harlan County there was a Lynch and a Benham. In Wolfe there was a Hazel Green Academy, although a private school a lot of Wolfe County students went there. It closed it's doors in the early 1980's. Annville was a school in Jackson County that closed in the early 1980's. McKee and Tyner went together to form Jackson County High in the early 1970's. Bush, Lily, Hazel Green, and London went together to form Laurel County, which later grew so big they had to split it into North and South.

Other schools that were on our schedule back in the day that no longer exist due to consolidation are Pine Knot (Mccreary County), Salyersville (Magoffin County), Nancy (Pulaski County), Brodhead and Mt Vernon (Rockcastle County), Oakdale (private in Breathitt County), and Lone Jack in Bell County.

Yep. Kingdom Come was a good basketball school. I believe they and Carr Creek were big rivals for a few years.
