Clintwood Va. State Champs
#1
Congratulations to the Clintwood Greenwave for winning the Va. State Championship today over Galax Va. Great game 33-28. Clintwood had only 2 loses on the season 1 to the Hazard Bulldogs in the opening game of the season.

Congrats, but if Hazard beat them then they must not be that great...

They are champions of Class A Division 1. Smallest classification in Virginia.

Congratulations from this Hazard Bulldog fan. We're looking forward to hosting the Greenwave in 2012. You all made us feel very welcome when we played at your house,, hope we can do the same at ours. Again congrats!!! Enjoy your victory.

So I guess Mayfield isn't, either, right?

You do understand the difference between Class A and Class AAAA, right?

By the same token, Highlands is no Trinity.

Big time Congrats to Clintwood!
#13

Not trying to argue with you, but just curious to why. I don't even know how their playoffs are set up. Just so I don't have to spend hours looking on the internet to find out, does someone know how they are set up and how it compares to ours? This isn't the first time I've heard someone say this and was just wondering.

The Virginia High School League is composed entirely of public schools in Virginia. For football, it has 6 Divisions. The VHSL uses a somewhat convoluted naming system. The smallest division is Group A - Division 1. Then there is Group A - Division 2. Group AA has Divisions 3 and 4. Group AAA has Divisions 5 and 6. So the largest schools are in "Group AAA - Division 6". But it is easier to say that there are 6 Divisions, based mostly on enrollment, with 1 being the smallest Division and 6 being the largest.

Schools can petition to play in a different Division (even if the Division has a smaller enrollment cutoff than the petitioning school) if they are geographically isolated, and if they are near the enrollment cutoff figure for the different Division.

Each Division has 32 teams in the playoffs.

As for how the Virginia playoffs compare to Kentucky in terms of talent, that I really don't know.
