Because the Athletic Director of your school voted for it! The Ahtletic Director is who is responsible for this process because the Athletic Director realizes just how much one more additional game means to his schools athletic budget. The Ahtletic Director recognizes that playoff games receive the highest attendance for a single playoff game than as many as two non-rivalry games. The Athletic Director recognizes that a single playoff game can completely fund as many as two other team sports such as golf.
So, who is responsible for all of you to go watch a blowout victory (or loss), it's YOUR school! You recognize that its only the fans who complain about this, you never EVER hear it from the school - WHY??? Because they are the one who wants this system! This is not professional sports where there is revenue sharing!
A 60 point loss last night by your school just funded five or six of your sports!

SD, I've always wondered where the funds come from to pay a #4 seed for participating in a game that they can't win 98% of the time. I know I never watch a 1-4 seed play. Is the revenue taken from the gate and concessions or does the KHSAA fund this? Just curious. Thanks in advance.

Usually, in the playoffs, the two teams split the money 50/50, or so ive heard.
Believe you me, the visiting team always get a paycheck.
