Meade County 33 - Collins 25
#1
Final from Shelby County.

Collins lead 17-14 at the half but a few costly mistakes and poor defense in the 2nd half cost them the game. The Titans have some young players and it showed tonight. Meade County has a good team with a great quarterback. Both teams should have good seasons this year.

The visiting Meade County football team scored 19 straight second-half points on its way to a 33-25 victory over Collins on Friday night at Shelby County’s Robert Doyle Stadium.

The Titans led 17-14 at halftime before the tide turned toward the Green Wave in the third period. Meade scored a pair of touchdowns in 2 minutes and 2 seconds early in the quarter to take control. The Green Wave tacked on another TD midway through the fourth quarter before Collins answered with a touchdown and two-point conversion with 3:06 to play.

The Titans never got the ball back, though, as senior Meade County quarterback Thomas Wilson helped the Class 6A Green Wave run out the clock.

“I never thought we really took control of the football game,” Collins Coach Jerry Lucas said. “We took the lead, and we had the lead there for a little while, but I never felt we were ever really in control of it.”

Wilson was the difference-maker, and the play-maker, for Meade County. The QB, who is being recruited by Air Force and Navy, rushed 17 times for 144 yards and one touchdown, while also completing 11 of 18 passes for 132 yards and one TD.

“Some kids just stand out, and he just stood out,” Lucas said. “I thought he was the difference tonight…He made key plays for them when he needed to.”

Meanwhile Collins sophomore quarterback Lawson Page completed 9 of 17 passes for 128 yards with one interception and two touchdowns and Titans senior Darian Dugle rushed nine times for 66 yards.

The Green Wave got rolling early when John Clark returned the opening kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown. The point-after attempt failed, but Meade still led 6-0 15 seconds into the game.

The Titans, though, wasted little time in responding. Less than a minute later Page connected with his older brother, senior wide receive Andrew, for a 65-yard touchdown pass play. Austin Nakatani’s PAT gave Collins a 7-6 lead.

The Titans increased their lead on the second play of the second quarter when Michael Brooks returned a Green Wave fumble 25 yards for a touchdown.

Meade, however, responded with a seven-play, 66-yard drive that Max Cundiff capped off with a 19-yard TD run on fourth-and-2. Wilson’s conversion run tied it at 14-all.

Collins came right back, though. Nakatani capped off an 11-play drive with a 30-yard field goal 3:38 before halftime.

The Green Wave then threatened to score right before the half, but senior linebacker Michael Brooks forced, and recovered, a fumble by Cundiff.

Collins, which seemed to have the momentum at halftime, went three-and-out on its first possession of the second half. It was almost all Meade from there.

The Green Wave quickly moved downfield and took the lead on Wilson’s 32-yard TD run, which came on fourth-and-2, with 7:52 left in the third quarter.

Four plays later Meade County got the ball back when Page was picked off. Two plays after that Wilson threw to a wide, wide open Brady Smith for a 33-yard touchdown.

“I didn’t think our tackling was that good tonight,” Lucas said.

Dugle fumbled on Collins’ next possession and on the Titans’ ensuing possession after that they lost 18 yards when the ball was snapped over the head of Brooks, who was in Collins’ “wildcat” formation at the time.

The Titans’ collective frustrations came to a head moments later when, midway through the fourth quarter, Brooks was flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct and pulled off the field. He left the field briefly before returning, flanked by two assistant coaches, in the fourth quarter, but not to the field.

“It’s just one of those thing where he lost his cool,” Lucas said. “It’s one of those life lessons. He’ll move on from it and we’ll move on from it.”

Aided by the penalty on Brooks the Green Wave scored again – this time a 17-yard run by Clark – to take a 33-17 lead with 7:04 to play.

Collins wouldn’t go without a fight, though. A 20-yard run by Dugle on third down set up a 12-yard TD toss from Page to Dugle.

The Titans failed to recover the onside kick and Meade County ran out the clock. Fittingly it was Wilson who did it. On a third-and-4 from the Titans’ 40, with less than a minute to play, Wilson got free for a 25-yard run. He took a knee from there to end the game.

The Green Wave out-gained the Titans 372 to 221 in total offense.

“Offensively we’ve got a long way to go,” Lucas said. “But I don’t think the ride is that long for our offense. We can see flashes

“I think we’re still trying to find ourselves,” Lucas said. “We’re still trying to find out who are playmakers are going to be.”

Andrew Page, one of the Titans’ top playmakers, missed almost all of the second half after taking a helmet to the right hip.

Collins next plays Mercer County at 5:30 p.m. next Saturday in the Stuart Powell Bowl at Boyle County.
