Was at this one. NCC did pretty much what ever they wanted offensively. Dixie had too many drops and were not prepared at all defensively.

Hmm, where is all the Dixie love now? Pike would not have made this much of a difference! This was a spanking!

Game 1 though and besides 1 year, Dixie always starts slow out the gate.

and that's a problem for Dixie, if they want to make some serious noise in 6A this year, they can't allow an offense to move them like that.

They looked very good on offense especially through the air. Had kids doing some good things after they caught the ball. Hightchew thew it well tonight.

oh don't get me wrong, NCC definitely earned that win, even if Pike played, I don't think it would've made a big enough difference in this one.
anyone got some stats on this one?

Put me down in the "shocked" category. Did not expect this type of result. Heck, I thought that Dixie would win outright even without Pike. NCC appears to be headed for another nice season if this game is a true indication of its talents.

I don't think NCC was involved in one 7 on 7 competition this year. Very impressive!
08-20-2011, 02:46 AM
Not totally surprised NCC won, but by that score, WOW. IS Dixie that bad or NCC that good? I think Dixie is going to prove they do not have much.

Put me down as "saw it coming". (Not on this scale, mind you, but still I put my money where my mouth is in the pick 'em games.) Year in and year out Dixie starts slow, but this loss might be a new low. Not sure what keeps the coaching staff employed out on the Highway.:HitWall:

I disagree, he is a good player, but alittle overrated. Even Pike couldn't make that big of a difference in this one.

They may have still lost the game but, I think it would have made a big difference having one of the best QBs in the country on the field. Not only would that boost the play and the confidence of the DH offense but, the NCC defense would have had to worry more about the QB position and change some of their coverage skeems!

^ No, I disagree! The hype on Pike is from what he did at camps, not on the field. The group of kids that won last night has beaten this same group of kids dating back to pee-wee football!

Yeah, he would have stopped the NCC offense! Let's remember that NCC put up 42, with their 2nd team!!!!

Congrats to NCC.

Another good point! Also if you look at other big name prospects from around the nation, from much larger football states, they drive their team to impressive records against more than likely tougher competition. While Pike only pushed Dixie to a less than impressive record last year. He wouldn't have made such a decisive Difference to catch up to that high powered NCC Offense. Congrats on a big win!

CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky. - Last year, Newport Central Catholic capped off a run to the Class 2A state title by winning all five of its playoff games by at least 30 points.
Friday night the Thoroughbreds showed they hadn’t lost any of that momentum by routing Dixie Heights, 42-13, despite losing its leading rusher and top five receivers from 2010.
“I think every year at NewCath we always have athletes to step in for the seniors that we do graduate,” said senior quarterback Brady Hightchew, one NewCath’s key returning players. “It is a small school, but we always have enough athletes, and they are always stepping in so it’s never really a down year for us.”
Hightchew threw for 232 yards and three touchdowns by completing 14 of 22 passes and ran 15 times for 111 yards and a touchdown.
In all, NewCath rolled up 470 yards of offense to 229 yards for the Colonels, including a 286- to 66-yard advantage in the first half.
Dixie Heights was without its top offensive threat, senior Zeke Pike, who was serving a one-game suspension which dated back to last year’s playoff loss to Highlands.
Goose Cohorn, usually a receiver, lined up under center for the Colonels and completed 10 of 20 passes for 131 yards and ran nine times for 34 yards and a touchdown.
Even with Pike, an Auburn recruit, in shorts on the sidelines, NewCath head coach Eddie Eviston gambled several times to give his small-school team an edge against the big-school, 6A Colonels.
NewCath converted three fourth-downs in the first half, including a fake punt that led to a touchdown in the second quarter, and opened the second half with an onside kick that the Thoroughbreds recovered.
“We’ve got to (be aggressive). A small school like us going against a big school like that, every advantage that we can get we have to go after it,” Eviston said. “We want to compete with these guys, and it’s really one of those things, we really don’t have much to lose. So we went after it a little bit.”
NewCath’s first fourth-down conversion came on a four-yard touchdown pass from Hightchew to junior running back Dylan Hayes to open the scoring with 2:00 remaining in the first quarter.
Senior Seth Bruns returned the kickoff that followed the length of the field to pull the Colonels to within a point, 7-6, but NewCath continued to control the game from there.
The Thoroughbreds answered with a pair of nine-play drives, one that immediately followed and resulted in a 1-yard scoring run by Hayes and the other which featured two fourth down conversions and a 34-yard touchdown pass to junior receiver Pete Collopy to lead 21-6 at the half.
After recovering their onside kick to open the second half, the Thoroughbreds scored in just five plays, capped by a nine-yard run by Hightchew, to push their lead to 28-6.
Junior linebacker Mason Myers picked off a deflected pass and returned it 30 yards for a score later in the third quarter, and Hightchew connected with senior Nick Woltermann for a pair of long passes in the fourth quarter, the last being a 34-yard touchdown pass.
Woltermann, who had the most catches last year among the Thoroughbreds returning wide receivers with four, had four catches for 103 yards in the game.
“I think Nick Woltermann is a very good receiver,” Hightchew said. “He can adjust to balls quickly and he can make stuff happen after he makes the catch.”
Hayes added 85 rushing yards on 18 carries for NewCath.
Cohorn capped the scoring by leading an 80-yard drive for the Colonels, scoring from eight yards out with 5:51 remaining.
“I thought Goose did a real nice job tonight for everything he was asked to do,” Eviston said. “I’m sure he’ll go back to his natural position and Dixie is going to be a good Dixie team.
Meanwhile, NewCath has already served notice that it will once again be a significant presence in Northern Kentucky and Class 2A.
“We know what we have now so if we can dominate like that against a 6A school like that, we should be able to hold our own against the district,” said Hightchew.
