Curtis Turley resigns as Collins boys' basketball coach
#1
Curtis Turley has resigned as Collins boys' basketball coach after one season.

Under Turley the Titans went 18-12 in their inaugural season, which ended with a 52-49 loss to Henry County in the first round of the 8th Region Tournament.

"He's had an opportunity he felt like he couldn't turn down," Collins Principal Anthony Hatchell said Monday afternoon.

"It's not high school [coaching]," Turley added, although he didn't get any more specific, when reached Monday afternoon.

He indicated that a formal announcement of his new job could come within the week.

One possible place of employment could the Kentucky High School Athletic Association.

Another could be Western Kentucky University, his alma mater. Turley still has a home in Bowling Green and the Hilltoppers have been in need of a third assistant coach for Coach Ken McDonald since Allen Edwards left in mid-April to become the second assistant at the University of Wyoming.

"I've got an opportunity at this point in my career that I feel like I can't pass up," Turley said.

Turley informed those Titans who'll be back at the school next year of his decision Monday afternoon.

"It was tough to tell them," he said. "I told them I'm going to keep up with them and hopefully will be able to see them in the State Tournament."

In 32 seasons of coaching high school basketball in the state Turley has compiled a 624-321 record. His victory total ranks him 11th on the state's all-time list.

The Titans could be one of the better teams in the 8th Region next year behind junior-to-be Dez Marshall, seniors-to-be Michael Brooks, Brian Stone, Larz Hall and Darian Dugle and sophomore-to-be Ralphie Stone.

This is not a surprise, but I at least thought they would get two years out of him...?

This should not be a shocker for anyone that knows Turley, he is never in one place long enough to build anything at all. Collins messed up when they did not hire Jason Booher last year because he was willing to move back to Shelbyville and lay a foundation for their first season, but they went with a guy that was with Shelby County for 2 years possibly when he was here the first time around...

I don't understand why they didn't hire Booher. Makes no sense at all to me.

Turley may hold the state record for having to have coached at the most schools in the state.

Expect the announcement, possibly as early as today, that former Collins Coach Curtis Turley will be the Director of Basketball Operations for the Western Kentucky University women's basketball team.

Mary Taylor Cowles is quickly building her coaching staff with some of the top high school boys' basketball coaches in state history. She hired Tim Riley, who won 307 games - including the 2004 state championship - at Warren Central, last week and now she'll add Turley, who has more than 600 high school victories to his credit.

The Sentinel-News is reporting that Collins' new coach will probably be announced today and it will likely be assistant coach Chris Gaither.

Gaither it is...great guy, but pretty light on the coaching experience. Surprised they didn't go after a bigger name.

I have to believe the Curtis Turley lives in a "Pod"..He moves around more than the Mayflower man..

Turley just does not stay long enough to do any program any good.
