Class Project.
#1
I have a presentation to do in my appalachian studies class, everybody else is doing coal or music so I decided to do sports. I am going to focus on three aspects of mountain sports.

Great Programs/Teams

Great Players.

And the truly great rivalries.

Any input or stories anyone has would be greatly appreciated, I am going to post this in Football, Basketball and Baseball forums. also any old pictures would be amazing to get ahold of.

You know, It's not Kentucky but it's Appalachian, check into Williamson (WV) Basketball. They had a sick tradition during the 80s, and once had 4,000 + regular in their Field House for games.

Kelly Coleman. He played for Wayland from 1953-1956. He still holds the career record for most points in Kentucky.

Teams
Pikeville football from the late 80's (1987, 1988, 1989 teams)
Hope this helps

Great teams from the late 80's 90's on

Belfry 89-91' You can talk to Coach Justice, JJ Hylton(18th leading scorer in state), Shawn Hager, all who are still in the area.

Paintsville 95-98' Coach Runyon, and J.R. Vanhoose(20th leading scorer in state)

You could also talk to Ervin Stepp from Phelps(9th leading scorer) and Todd Conley from Elkhorn City(11th all time leading scorer)

Of course you can try to get up with John Pelphrey, Elisha Justice and Jody Thompson as well.

PM if you want to get up with anyone listed(except Pelphrey) as I have #'s or e-mail if you want to talk to them.

Thanks very much guys. btw if anyone could get me a picture of the gyms from these old high schools I would greatly appreciate it. This is really about how consolidation ruined everything. And about the truly amazing stories in mountain sports.

good documentary to check out is Basketball in Kentucky "Great Balls of Fire". Came out in 2002 or 2003, but it talks about Kelly Coleman, Wayland and Carr Creek basketball teams and covers alot of basketball history in kentucky.

If it's about consolidation, then you should definitely check into Williamson like I said. They're consolidating this year into Mingo Central bringing an end to a wonderful basketball tradtion.

I did a paper last year on the history of basketball in Johnson County. If I can find my research and all that I'll let you have it as long as you need. I interviewed Carroll Burchett (Flat Gap legend and played for Rupp in the late 50's) and I've got a bunch of newspaper articles from the 50's and 60's with teams like Meade, Flat Gap, and the Paintsville teams of the time. And of course all of my random information on the Paintsville teams of the 80's, 90's, and so on. Just let me know and I'll do what I can for you. I've got a lot of old articles from Paintsville baseball from the 70's and early 80's. And of course the late 2000's.
