GEORGETOWN, Ky. --- The Western High School boys' basketball team didn't win a title at the Toyota Classic this weekend, but coach Paul Handley saw his team grow up.
The Warriors showed why they figure to be a major player in the Sixth Region Tournament this postseason.
Western upset host Scott County 83-80 in overtime in the semifinals Saturday morning, then rallied from a 22-point deficit before losing 63-58 to Clark County that night.
"We were on milk, and now we're eating meat," Handley said. "We've grown up so much in the past two weeks. This is a great group -- they bond well and just love to play."
After upsetting the Cardinals -- who are No. 5 in The Courier-Journal's Litkenhous Ratings -- it looked as if No. 20 Western (11-5) was going to get run out of the Scott County gym by Clark County.
The No. 4 Cardinals (17-4) opened a 42-20 lead late in the second quarter and were ahead 42-26 at halftime.
"We could have folded," Handley said. "But I told them we needed to make a statement. The tournament is not too far away, and we needed to come back. We just made a few bad errors down the stretch. We were right there."
The Warriors outscored Clark County 10-0 to start the third quarter and pulled within 47-45 after three quarters.
Western took a 50-49 lead on LaMichael Harris' steal and dunk with 7:13 left in the game, but the Cardinals scored the next eight points.
"They were the aggressor in the third quarter," Clark County coach Scott Humphrey said. "They're very good."
Clark County's decisive run came on three baskets by Corey Rogers and another from Travis Purvis. Robbie Stenzel and Bopper Stenzel had two assists apiece in the surge.
Western pulled within 59-58, but Robbie Stenzel sealed it with two free throws and a dish to Hakeem Moore for a layup.
"This was a great experience for us," Handley said. "Now we just have to keep going forward."
Western's Ryan Taylor had another huge game. The 6-foot-6 senior had 37 points, 20 rebounds and six blocks against Scott County, then racked up 23 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks against Clark County.
Purvis led Clark County with 19 points. Rogers added 16 and Robbie Stenzel had 11 points, eight rebounds and six assists. Clark County had 17 assists on 24 buckets.
