Did coach Preston resign????

That is the rumor in Mt. Washington. Sad that a guy can take a team to the title game for only the second time in school history, and he is asked to leave a short time later.

Anyone know why he was "asked" to leave?

Resigned yesterday. Supposedly he was told he had to rehire some assistant to go back to running the offense before Coach Preston switched to the bone. He elected to step aside.

I take it this assistant is not in line for the HC spot?

From what I heard the admin is dealing with major backlash from players and parents demanding that Preston be asked to return. Parents and players have organized and it is getting ugly. I would venture to say the admin already knows who they want to take over. This response by the players and parents has probably caused them to rethink where they are going with this IMO. I spoke to Doug last night; he told me he is over it and ready to move on.

Who and why were they trying to tell Coach Preston who to hire?

Anymore info on this situation.....Pioneer News made it sound like he wasn't a good fit with his system.....they didn't come out and say why he was asked to resign....but not being a good fit probably has something to do with the assistant coaches.

He was second guessed from the beginning. Supposedly was told a week after taking the job he had to retain assistants and allow them to run the offense. That lasted until they were 2-4. He made changes and they ended up playing Bell for the championship. I also know the principal that hired him left before Doug ever got there. They brought a retired person back for that job. She was non-supportive. He had a constant struggle with being told how to handle day to day coaching. Knowing Doug he is not one to be told who to play where and what offense to run.

I think he is looking into Lawrence county. He is a three back belly guy. Very much similar to Hilton's style of play.

And word is now that they very well may go back to the way things used to be BP (Before Preston).

Doug really should look into the Bryan Station job. He could do big things there, bigger than what he did at Western High.

Didn't he have a pretty good run over there?

What will BE do? Any chance Settles returns?
01-29-2011, 12:41 AM
Settles was a very good fit at East. He never would have left had it not been for family situations. He carried on and built on the tradition East had established. Preston went his own way, which he had the right to do, but it didn't work out even though he took them to the state final.
01-29-2011, 08:38 AM
I think it would be different if Settle was winning State Championships. How do you bring a guy back just b/c they were an above average team?
01-29-2011, 10:51 AM
Obviously, the views at East are that they care as much about their image as they do about short term success. Preston went to the finals and most of his assistants quit during the next off season. Settles was a smooth transition after Egan retired and he kept the "insiders" happy.

Yeah, it almost seems as if they don't care where they are going or how fast they are going to get there as long as THEY are driving the bus.
