QB Cresap make commitment
#1
Collins High School quarterback Branden Cresap turned in a sensational senior season on the football field and has now found his college destination.

The 6-foot, 185-pound Cresap has committed to Lindsey Wilson.

Cresap completed 235 of 404 passes for 3,549 yards and 42 touchdowns while only throwing for 10 interceptions.

In his final game, Cresap completed 37 of 66 passes for 440 yards and three touchdowns in a 31-26 loss to Western.

Branden Cresap quarterbacked the Collins football program to memorable first season.

Now he will try to help another program follow up on its fine first season.

Cresap committed this week to play next fall for Lindsey Wilson College, which recently completed its inaugural season in NAIA, going 5-6.

“It’s a school on the rise,” Cresap said. “It’s exciting to go build something there. It’s a lot like coming to Collins. It felt like the right fit for me.”

Cresap was a big reason why Collins celebrated so much success as a first-year program this season. He completed 235 of 404 passes (58.2 percent) for 3,549 yards and 42 touchdowns as the Titans went 11-2, falling to Louisville Western, 31-26, in the Class AAAA quarterfinals.

“I have coached football in the state of Kentucky since '93, and Branden is one of the best quarterbacks this state has produced in my opinion,” Collins Coach Jerry Lucas said. “I am very proud of Branden and all that he accomplished during his football career.”

Cresap passed for more than 7,000 yards and 84 touchdowns in the 29 games he started at Shelby County and Collins. He was the starter as a sophomore at Shelby before tearing his anterior cruciate ligament in the third game of the 2008 season. He went 20-5 as a starter during his final two years of high school, going 9-3 for the Rockets as a junior.

“This past year at Collins we had a great season,” Lucas said. “I doubt that any school has ever ‘split’ schools and had a better season, and Branden was a huge reason for our success. His leadership both on and off the field of competition has been remarkable.

“I have no doubt he will go to Lindsey Wilson this fall and help that team become a championship program.

“They have just started a football program and had a very good first season, and I think Branden is just the guy to lead them.”

The Blue Raiders finished third in the Mid-South Conference East Division with a 4-2 record.

“Coach [Chris] Oliver, the head coach and the quarterbacks coach, I feel real comfortable with him. He is like a Coach Lucas-type,” Cresap said. “I think we can jell, and with Coach Oliver running the Spread offense, I think I fit in, and there will not be much of a learning curve since I’ve been running the spread offense for three or four years.”

The Blue Raiders used a pair of quarterbacks last season (Ricky Bowling and Greg Young) with Bowling seeing a bulk of the action late in the season.

During his recruitment, though, Cresap was told that one of them had quit the team.

“So I’m assuming I will be able to compete to play my freshman,” Cresap said.

Cresap said he probably would major in education but that he has enjoyed being on local radio, so said he might consider majoring in communications.

In the meantime, though, he will become a recruiter. And he doesn’t have to look far because the Blue Raiders are also in hot pursuit of Collins senior wide receiver Tavis Elzy, with whom Cresap connected 74 times for 1,326 yards and 19 touchdowns this past season.

“I’m definitely trying to get Tavis down there, too,” Cresap said.

The Blue Raiders, who also have former Shelby County players Edwin Thomas on Matt Page on their roster, are also recruiting SCHS senior Quinten Cottrell.

“That would be nice too, having another familiar face,” Cresap said. “It’s only going to help the transition.”

I really enjoyed watching the Bluegrass Bowl at Lexington Catholic. It was a great atmosphere, a great field, and a great game.
